Since the Democratic Party's electoral strategy always includes plenty of race-play - and since it was the party of segregation well into the 1960s - I thought there should be a thread for discussing it.
Roots of Democratic racism and race-mongering

Great idea. Please take the time to support this with evidence. A great start would be the Great Society debates during the Johnson Administration.Originally posted by oxcoug View PostSince the Democratic Party's electoral strategy always includes plenty of race-play - and since it was the party of segregation well into the 1960s - I thought there should be a thread for discussing it.
Also, you, apparently, did not read the NYT article I linked in the other thread that showed how the former Democrats became Republicans once black people started trending Democrat."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.
The rest of us rarely bother to think about our actions." --Solon

Democrats were the torchbearers of partisan racism for a long time. I would like to believe that the same internal fire that inspired me to reject Mormonism, because of its homophobia, would have inclined me toward Republicanism if I had been alive in Lincoln's day. Presently, neither party has an 'enlightened' view on race.

But Democrats are most supportive of improved economic status of the disadvantaged ethnic groups. Democrats are sensitive to the economic needs of the disadvantaged while Republicans taunt and ridicule them. There must be a reason why African Americans vote uniformly for Democrats and almost uniformly reject Republican candidates."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."
Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

I would word it differently, but you are essentially correct. Black Americans are disproportionately poor, and Democrats tend to support policies that make 'poor' more comfortable for the people who are stuck there, and the Democrats tend to support (marginally) better educational policy for helping the children of the poor to attain a brighter future. That is why Black Americans tend to vote Democratic. Oh... there is also the fact that the most overt racists today tend to make their home in the GOP. As the saying goes, you probably aren't a racist if you are a Republican, but if you are a racist, you are probably a Republican.Originally posted by Topper View PostBut Democrats are most supportive of improved economic status of the disadvantaged ethnic groups. The GOP don't give a crap about the poor, because they are essentially Austrian in terms of economic philosophy, "do nothing lest your intervention harm us later." Why else would a leading GOP presidential candidate be so proud of his Austrian economic principles. It's a thinly-veiled effort to shun the poor even more.Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostI would word it differently, but you are essentially correct. Are you trolling or did you actually say something this general and stupid with a straight face?
Um, yes. It's pretty simple - cherche la money.Originally posted by Topper View PostThere must be a reason why African Americans vote uniformly for Democrats and almost uniformly reject Republican candidates.
Since the late 60s the Democratic Party has been the party that has aligned itself with every policy and program that the core of black leaders have favored - i.e. every program that promises money and benefits. Welfare expansion, affirmative action, restitution for slavery and pretty much everything that bestows public benefits on a large number of African Americans.
I wouldn't make the case that all of those programs are invalid - though some are terribly implemented policies - but there's no mystery in why the black voting block defaults to Democratic candidates.Ute-ī sunt fīmī differtī

You are clearly out of your depth.
How about the biggest entitlement expansion in the history, the 2003 Medicare Modernization Act - pushed through by none other than George W. Bush and (disastrously, stupidly) with the support of a Republican Congress.
How about the American Dream Downpayment Act of 2003?
But never mind that stuff - the real way the GOP helps the poor is in the fact that pro-growth economic policies are the only way to create an environment where "the poor" become upwardly mobile. The GOP favors pro-growth policies that create opportunity.Ute-ī sunt fīmī differtī

Medicare is for aged and for the disabled, not for the poor. Nice try.Originally posted by oxcoug View PostYou are clearly out of your depth.

Cute.
You make a ridiculous assertion - that Republicans have never pursued policies intended to help poor people - which barely merits a response but which I (probably wasting my time) indulged, and then you think you have some kind of win when you can dismiss one response as not being primarily targeted to assisting the poor (even though it is meant to do exactly that - even if it helps people who aren't exactly "poor" at the same time).Ute-ī sunt fīmī differtī
