  • Ron Paul is like your cranky but likable uncle who's great at Thanksgiving but

makes you nervous in polite company.

A quick and brutal review of at least one thing that makes him unelectable - especially running against a black president.

This thread never really got going but I think our resident Paul-bots could use a home.

Thanks but I like hanging out at the Romney thread instead. Someone has to keep those misguided people informed.

I'm starting to think that neither Paul nor Romney will have a chance against an Obama/Hillary ticket. It is just a feeling. But I do think that Paul could make a decent showing if he were to get the nomination. You can think of the GOP as three distinct constituencies with some marginal crossover. You have the Business GOP, The Christian Right, and the Libertarian wings of the Republican party. The business wing of the party, of which Romney is the representative candidate, is always the wing that generates the candidate, and the Libertarian wing is getting pissed off, because it is really the Libertarian wing that carries the torch of 'small government,' and lets face it -- there hasn't been a Republican president in my lifetime who didn't significantly expand the size of government during his tenure. I think a lot of the Libertarian wing is tired of the lip service, and won't show up to support Romney. Then there is the significant chunk of the Christian Right that will fail to show up for a Mormon. Maybe this won't be a huge number, but it could be a close election, like many we've seen recently, where even a couple of points could flip the outcome.

What Romney has going for him is that he can appeal to 'serious' people, the significant number of people who are invested in the status quo of how things presently work, and want someone who will come and preserve the system. I think a lot of people, the kind of 'serious' people who would have been turned off by Sarah Palin, someone like PAC comes to mind, could fall in love with Romney. Whether these serious people constitute a bigger group than the chunk of Libertarian and Christian support that Romney loses, that remains to be seen.

But Obama, in spite of the ridiculous caricatures that ox & ilPad like to parade, is also a serious man. What sheen he might have lost for those people who thought his leadership might genuinely rise to the level of his rhetoric has been replaced to some measure with the gravitas that comes from his handling of the wars. Sorry GOP, Obama gets to be the guy who killed Bin Laden, and Obama gets to be the one to end these expensive, bloody, unpopular wars. Gravitas.

Throw in Clinton for VP (I agree that Biden brings nothing to the ticket), and you have double gravitas with a big appeal to women voters. Hillary's negatives are not what they used to be.

And finally, back to Paul. While it is hard to imagine him doing as well as Romney, I still think he would make a decent run (though it is unlikely that he will get the chance), because he is the only candidate who would actually work to bring an end to the money-merry-go-round that is our federal government. The torch-and-pitchfork crowd has gotten really big, and Paul is their guy.

I'm not sure the GOP wants an image of Ron Paul giving a South-sympathetic lecture on the Civil War while standing in front of a confederate flag. Not the best optics when trying to unseat the first African-American POTUS.
