This is an interesting choice of design in S Korea:
They could have gone over the top if they built that in the middle of an RC plane field...
Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats.
- Howard Aiken
Any sufficiently complicated platform contains an ad hoc, informally-specified, bug-ridden, slow implementation of half of a functional programming language.
- Variation on Greenspun's Tenth Rule
It's time to close down all military bases in Korea.
"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill
"I only know what I hear on the news." - Dear Leader
Could it be that the Koreans view it as a fitting tribute to the memory of the WTC and cultural differences cause us to see it as less appropriate than they do?
The project is designed by MVRDV, a MAJOR design office out of the Netherlands. As far as premiere design goes, MVRDV is up there near the very top.
Here is a statement from the office:
“MVRDV regrets deeply any connotations The Cloud project evokes regarding 9/11,” it wrote on its website.
“It was not our intention to create an image resembling the attacks nor did we see the resemblance during the design process. We sincerely apologize to anyone whose feelings we have hurt.”
To be fair to the architects, who are stationed in the Netherlands, two towers connected by a 'bridge' has been a 'type' of building style since... the Petronss Towers in Kuala Lumpur? I'm not sure, but it has been around for a while now, and the pixelated look of these towers fits into the larger oeuvre of MVRDV.
So, I guess you can be offended if you like, but you don't have to be offended, and it IS your choice.

They also said it was inspired by the twin towers. Now they are backtracking/lying.

Oh brother.
A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life. - Mohammad Ali
It would be an impressive feat of engineering, but it's damn ugly...
Yep.
The Petronas Towers aren't ugly in my opinion, but I think these buildings miss the mark.
