  • Newt and child labor laws.

Maybe he figures that eventually all the good jobs will be in China and then the Chinese can use US kids to make all the cool t-shirts and athletic shoes?

Before we start messing around with child labor laws, let's attack the real causes of poverty in this country:

The War on Drugs destroying the family in the poor neighborhoods and a social safety net that rewards unplanned pregnancy, indolence, and a lack of personal responsibility in the name of "protecting kids."

No able-bodied adult should receive SNAP, TANF, WIC, Section 8, or Medicaid unless they are gainfully employed or seeking employment actively. The Clinton-era Contract With America welfare reforms that Obama vacated should be put back into place.

Then, we need to spend serious money and time on our schools. No Child Left Behind should be scrapped. Federal Oversight of Education should only be to help with funding, not with unfunded mandates. Where you live should not determine the quality of the education, resources, and facilities that you have. Take all the money made from taxing the shit out of drugs and use it to fund schools. Pay real money to great teachers and bring the inspiring folks who become lawyers, physicians, and engineers back to the ranks. Build state-of-the-art facilities everywhere.

We shouldn't be shocked at the poverty and graduation rates in places like Dillion and Latta, South Carolina when we see the deplorable condition of their school system and the attitudes and priorities that let things like that happen.

This is not just the fault of the parents. If you're a product of your environment, then think about the histories of some of these places and you'll start to realize why the poor stay poor. The government throws money at problems instead of solutions. Building a great building won't mean shit if you hire C students to teach there for $36k a year.
"Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.
The rest of us rarely bother to think about our actions." --Solon
