• 767 makes landing without gear down...

    This happened earlier today.

I have a good friend who is a pilot for Delta. He is very well compensated and this video shows why pilots deserve their pay. Landing a bird that size without landing gear without any injuries to the passengers and crew is one of the many reasons pilots may be underpaid.

Did the passengers get to go down the emergency exit's inflatable slide? That always looks fun.

Wow, that looked pretty easy. I mean, no complications. Looked just like a regular landing but w/o wheels.

IPU, what does your Delta friend make a year? How many times has he had to make a similar landing?

You're right. His friend is probably grossly overpaid.

Don't go down this route, IPU! Next thing you know, falafel will have you springing out your weed scale in a Cafe Rio... he will never be satisfied.

Based on your statement, it sounds as if we should wait until they actually prove they can land a plane without landing gear, before paying them for that theoretical ability.

Actually, I'm more interested in what they are actually paid. I have no real idea if they are over paid or not.

But, in response to your comment, I will admit that I read IPU's comment as saying that having to make landings like these is evidence why we should pay pilots more money. I'm interested in how often landings like these are required. In terms average number of lives saved, I'm willing to be police officers and firemen save a whole lot more during the span of their careers, yet are likely to make much less than your average commercial airline pilot.

Buddy of mine flies for SkyWest. He has since 2004. He does regional routes for Delta and United. I believe his salary is in the mid-70K range and he started much lower. Basically he's been right on par with NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority subway operators. Right about where it should be.

70 grand a year? What happened to the days when pilots made $500k/year?

Delta pilots will make north of 200k as captains with several years experience. But this is the top 10%. Starting for first officers is usually pretty low. Teachers salary.

According to Obama, my friend is rich. He's been a captain now for 20+ years.

I've not heard that my friend has made that kind of landing, but if it was necessary, he most likely would be able to do it. That he and other pilots are able to make a safe landing without gear as well as other things that happen during a flight are why pilots are compensated rather well.
