"William Young, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, stressed in his testimony that the agency is not seeking a taxpayer bailout, "but we are here to ask the Congress for help."

I didn't know Congress had their own money tree.

Again, it appears that the union costs are having a huge impact on the losses.

Amazing, you read that article and see the union's as causing the problem....I read it and see a decrease in 12 BILLION pieces of mail and this little quote:

Last year's high fuel prices also sapped funds from the post office, which operates more than 200,000 vehicles. Every 1-cent increase in the price of fuel costs the post office $8 million.

as far more causative of problems than paying people a decent wage.

Read my lips (I got that from Bush)......did you see what the retiree healthcare costs amounted to? Almost 25% of the 'shortfall'. I would say that is huge. That was my point. My other point was (amazing you only read the last sentence) that this guy was saying he wasn't asking for a bailout, but simply asking for help from Congress. What kind of help do you think he was hoping for? Love? A handshake? Money?

And what would other companies do when they lose the revenue from 12 billion pieces of mail? They'd downsize. No way for the USPS to do that.

Most of the 12 billion decrease is attributable to the decline in mailings for pre-approved credit cards now that the credit market has dried up.
