Military Service for Citizenship

This is a little different, since PR, AS and Guam are already part of the US, they are citizens (I think) At least that is what my Guamanian Platoon Sgt told me a million yrs ago.
I may be small, but I'm slow.
A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to, "The United States of America ", for an amount of "up to and including my life - it's an honor."

Yeah they're really in no danger. If my memory serves me, they are U.S. nationals, not citizens, but basically the same perks as citizenship.Originally posted by happyone View PostThis is a little different, since PR, AS and Guam are already part of the US, they are citizens (I think) At least that is what my Guamanian Platoon Sgt told me a million yrs ago."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I would support this as an option, but not if it were the only one."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.
The rest of us rarely bother to think about our actions." --Solon

I support the DREAM act. If a kid is college-eligible, give him the chance to get a green card! That's a net benefit to incentivize higher education."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

I would support this as a very thoughtful supplement to the Dream Act. Simply put, not everyone is bound for college, and this could help. Likewise, not everyone has the moral flexibility to contribute to the business of killing other human beings, which is always a morally weighty matter, even when it is justified. Add to this that some people are a better fit for college and a professional career path, and a detour as a grunt shooting at other humans, is probably not going to be that helpful. However as a supplement to the Dream Act, I think your suggestion would help a lot of other students in the ways that you describe.Originally posted by The_Tick View PostThis is something that I have been tossing around in my head for a while now.
Faith mentioned the "Dream Act" that Governer Brown recently signed into law in California. Providing State money for Illegal's to go to college. (A really bad idea in my mind.)
Now...this is how I would do it, and it would kill two birds with one stone.
If you have gone to High School in the US of A, and are "illegal", then we have a proposition for you.
Enlist in Military service for a length of 4 years.
This will do a few things for you:
1. Gets you permanent US Citizenship
2. The opportunity to get specialized in a field that can be used after service is complete.
3. Qualifies you for the GI Bill. (Switches the financial obligation from the State government to the Feds.)
4. Qualifies you for a VA Loan when it comes time to purchase your first home.
All of this allows them to fulfill their stated goal...living the American Dream.
This is how my wifes family came to the US from the Philipines. It has been done in the past and I think it would be effective in the future.
Any thoughts?

Why should money be given away for free? Why should illegals have greater access to free money for college than someone that is here legally?
I am a big proponant of having someone work to earn something. Not give them something now, so that "maybe" they contribute in the future.

They will come in spastic, like tameless horses! They will leave in plastic as numbered corpses. They will learn early to travel light-ite-ite, and pray to Jesus Christ with all of their might.....WE WILL ALL GO DOWN TOGETHER!Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostI would support this as a very thoughtful supplement to the Dream Act. What they will learn is the camaraderie that is the backbone of citzenship in this great Republic and while they might be all fucking high and moral about never killing people, in time we will break down their superior values to our level...you know the rest of us who lay awake at night just nocturnally emitting for the chance to left, right, left, right kill!
Who was wrong? And who was right-ight-ight...didn't matter in the thick of the fight! WE WILL ALL GO DOWN TOGETHER!
For the record, it would be healthy IMO to expand the opportunities for national service above and beyond military service. Some conservation corps sort of deal where they do something that serves the nation and demonstrates that they are willing to place some value on something greater than just themselves.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

I like this idea. Or what about other areas of service within the government. Go be a clerk / janitor / whatever or the Fed Gov for 4 years in exchange for citizenship and a free education.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostFor the record, it would be healthy IMO to expand the opportunities for national service above and beyond military service. I agree with Tick regarding the something for nothing issue, but I can also see that military service is not for everybody. Hell even give them the education first and they have to put in their time as a professional working for the gov, at which time they get citizenship. If they don't follow through, deport them."It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."

You can call it 'giving it away for free,' or you can call it 'a good investment.' Investing in public education has, historically, paid out more than it costs. The 'maybe they will contribute' issue might be a real risk on a case-by-case basis, but considered on the whole, public education pays back.Originally posted by The_Tick View PostRobin,

Kind of hard to quantify that for people who don't have a social security number and/or pay taxes.Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostYou can call it 'giving it away for free,' or you can call it 'a good investment.'
