Peter Thiel to build off-shore libertarian principality / mecca

Peter Thiel has funnelled $1.25 million to the Seasteading Institute, a California-based organisation that plans to launch a floating colony into international waters, allowing its residents to live by libertarian ideals.

There's some pretty harsh and damming criticism in there:

"But while some Ayn Rand acolytes may think the idea is brilliant, it's not without its critics.

Margaret Crawford, an expert on urban planning and a professor of architecture at Berkeley, told Details: 'it's a silly idea without any urban-planning implications whatsoever.'"

If you've got the urban planning/architecture folks against you, you're screwed.

The first thing that popped into my head was how would you defend something like that? The atolls were pretty easy pickings for the smokers if I recall my Waterworld correctly.

P.S. A little bit of trivia you people will appreciate:

The girl who played Enola in WW also played Deb in Napoleon Dynamite

How far out do you have to go before you can do something like this?

I'm reminded of those British sea-squatters that took over one of Britain's WWII Maunsell Forts out in the ocean and declared themselves the Principality of Sealand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

That is, well, damned interesting. It has quite a colorful history.

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
