  • The Decline of DesNews

Some of you may recall how I lamented the appointment of Joe Cannon as editor of the Deseret News. It looks like he is cleaning house and stamping out any and all stories that would cast the church in a negative light. What a shame.

If I would have known you were going to go all exUte on this one I never would have indulged you in the first place.

When I won the Deseret News Gridpicks one week in 2006, the DNews sent me tickets to the Boise State - Utah football game even though I said I preferred BYU tickets.

Based on that experience, maybe they really do need a house cleaning at the DNews to get rid of all Utah fans and liberal Mormons.

Then again, they way BSU kicked some Ute tail in that game (36-3) maybe that was the ideal gift for a diehard BYU fan. I gave the tickets to my parents and they had a good time.

Well what do you suggest that they do to maintain readership and not go the way of the Rocky Mountain News or the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (which also may go under soon). The SLtrib is the largest paper in the state and it is going to be tough to take over the place and it is questionable if Utah can maintain 2 straight forward newspapers. Going to a Mormon niche paper may be the only way for it to survive. In fact, the Mormon Times is starting to distribute on a national level. The newspaper industry isn't just an industry being affected by the recession it is a dying industry.

I think Cannon is on to something with the Mormon Times, but that isn't the DesNews. He is asking his staff to suppress journalistic integrity. If that happens DesNews ceases to be a newspaper regardless of how profitable it is.

Business decision, plain and simple. Does this surprise you? Has Joe Cannon ever been shown to have an ethical bone in his body when it comes to business?

              Bingo.

I am fine with the new "Mormon Times" segment. And the Church News. But don't tell your writers to slant the truth.

The DesNews has has been a decent paper. They have had some good, talented writers. This is a crappy way to treat them.

It's interesting that Cannon seems to think that news consumers want only stories that paint their church/organization/government/whatever in a positive light. Most people, I would like to think, would prefer their news to be more "fair" than "faith-promoting", even if it was upholding their personal beliefs.

The fracturing and the specializing of different media is not entirely a good thing. People can now get their news in a fashion that reflects what they already believe and plays to confirmation bias. It is one less thing that will bind us together.

The best journalists are extra political. There is a definite liberal tendency among reporters but it is more of a cynical distrust of all institutions of power as opposed to cheerleading for the Democratic party.

I think any decent reporter needs to have a pit bull attitude and keep a watch on those in power. The wall between the editorial pages and the news needs to be there, not completely abandoned

I have been getting both papers delivered to my house since I moved back to SLC. I will spend 20+ minutes reading the Trib...I will spend probably 5 minutes going thru the DesNews.

The Mormon Times was a good move for readership, but I will say that I wouldn't get too comfortable if I wrote for the DesNews because I would have zero trust in Cannon. There are few less impressive men in the newspaper industry or really any industry.

Dumping on Bob Bernick and Lee Davidson is one of the dumbest things they can do. They're the best thing about the paper.

But Tad Walch had that awesome interview with Dick Cheney when he came to speak at BYU. He asked him about important issues like which kind of syrup was Cheney's favorite at IHOP. It was hard hitting stuff

Well the other way to treat them is to give them a pink slip, not sure which is worse.

Don't leave us hanging. What's his syrup of choice?
