That would be relevant if we were talking about ruling the world. As it stands, we are discussing a power/accountability ratio, thereby rendering nonsensical your post about DMV workers.

No power at the DMV? Aren't you from California?

Two police officers attacked by a man with a hatchet. Another example of how police can be targeted and put other officers on alert and the impact later on the 2 officers who were attacked.

The officers, all recent graduates of the Police Academy assigned to the 103rd Precinct in Jamaica, were asked to pose for a picture by a freelance photographer at the intersection of 162nd Street and Jamaica Avenue shortly before 2 p.m. when the man attacked them from behind, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said.

The suspect "charged at the officers with a hatchet in his hand," Bratton said. "Unprovoked and not speaking a word, the male then swung at one of the officers with a hatchet, striking his right arm. After striking that officer, the suspect continuing swinging the hatchet, striking a second officer in the head."

I saw that story on the news. That's horrific. I hope they recover; one of them got a hatchet blow to the head.

That's a shame. No one had to die that night.

I live in the area, the geography is as described. What do you make of the assertion that they couldn't let a guy brandishing an unsheathed katana get to a crowded area? Further complicating the judgement is the fact that he was dumb enough to take a stab at one of the cops.

Frankly I'm satisfied with the explanation.

I can't imagine he was very close to a crowded area, because a cop isn't going to shoot into a crowded area. The suspect was running away. When a suspect is running away from cops, the natural assumption is that he's trying to get away from the cops, not that he's looking to slice up a bunch of bystanders. But then again, I wasn't there.

The suspect could be mere feet away from the crowd, but with a clear backdrop, enabling a clear shot. Until you are intimately familiar with the facts of the incident, I would be very careful about passing the judgement that you seem to be passing. As for shooting someone who is running away from police, there's plenty of case law and law on the books that address this issue. Until you understand all of that, you may not understand the police officers' actions.
