  • The problem with these discussions is that everyone wants to paint the individuals involved as black and white caricatures. All good or all bad.

I agree. Each of these is an individual story with different circumstances. That said, even in this charged atmosphere we have an incident where a man was shot 7 times at point blank range in the back. Good hell. It's hard to believe that race didn't play a factor in how it got to that outcome.

I don't know how accurate this read out is, but interesting.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Plenty of white dudes are shot by police. Plenty of black cops shoot people too. It’s not as simple as a bunch of racist white cops shooting black men due to racism.

There is a policing problem and there is a “too many guns” problem. And there is a poverty and family breakdown problem, too many black men being sent to prison, etc.

right, but that's an entirely different discussion.

I dont know that I disagree. But this is what is in front of us right now and causing the pain.

              • I posted this awhile back, but this is a good 2 part podcast on police shootings.

                https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts...s-fired-part-1

Deescalation is sorely needed, on both sides. The society that in general gives cops too much leeway when shots are fired. And cops who reach for their gun for too many inconsequential things.

Doesn’t everybody assume that cops are basically assholes? These are guys who chose a job based on the thought of “Yeah I could shoot somebody or beat up somebody as part of my job.”

There is no doubt in my mind that there is a police violence problem in the country — agree that this is a good example of a shooting that is may be technically “justified” but shouldn’t have happened.

Sorry to commando and the other super wokes here but I think this dude gets shot even if he’s white.

that bit is actually quite profound and is really the only solution to this problem. you have to increase funding so you can hire better people and improve and increase training. some jobs can't have bad apples, he says. but when you are paying $35k, you are going to get a lot of bad apples. and when you don't train them, you are going to get good apples who make horrible decisions. rock then goes on to joke that american airlines can't have bad apples - yeah, and american airlines is paying their pilots $120k.

this shit isn't rocket science. you want good cops, you want to root out the bad apples? hire better people and give them better training.

                          • People are often compelled by their political bias to justify the most disgusting crimes- even double murders. I gotta say- kind of makes you look like a piece of shit when you do that.

                              • it's funny, when black men get shot by cops, they should have just wised up and used common sense because the cop had a gun. when a 17 year old loads up his ar-15 and drives over the border to a violent riot and the inevitable confrontation happens, everybody else should have wised up because that's his right. wonder why trayvon martin didn't get the same benefit of the doubt when he went to get skittles and iced tea.

i don't know how the wisconsin homicide statute works and there might be some overcharging here, but how can anybody begin to morally rationalize this? in what world is it ok for civilians to be roaming the streets in plate carriers looking for fights over the defense of property in a community they're not part of? we're pepper spraying journalists and blinding protesters with rubber bullets, but the cops show up and give water to and encourage these people? this is a symptom of a broken policing model.
