  • Romneys in Mexico

Cool article in the Washington Post about some relatives of Mitt Romney who are living in Mexico. His great-grandfather moved to Mexico in the late-1800's to avoid federal prosecution for practicing polygamy. Mitt's grandfather later moved his family, but a segment of the clan still remain. It's kind of funny seeing pictures of a Mormon family looking straight from the UCo and it turns out they're multi-generational Mexican.

My great-grandfather's wives were both Romneys (literally sister wives). The story about them leaving Colonia Juarez has always been a big deal to us. My grandma used to tell us about how she hid her favorite toys under the stairs, fully expecting that they would return to Mexico someday.

There was a sister missionary in my mission named Romney that came straight from the colonies. Blonde/white hair and skin.

Growing up in California we had a family in our ward and the wife was from Nuevo Casas Grandes. She wasn't a Romney that I remember, but she was white as white could be with blue eyes and blonde hair and a thick Spanish accent.

This chick I knew on the mission spoke Spanish, but she also spoke english like a regular Uco. Mo.

I think Mitt's fine, but had George Romney been nominated, it would have been problematic.

There are several people in my ward who grew up in the colonies. But one couldn't tell from looking at them - talk, act, appear totally LDS American. Born and raised in Mexico, they are fluent in Spanish but seldom have I heard them speak Spanish. No accent whatsoever in their English. The ironic thing is that there are also several hispanic familes in our ward that are American but they are hispanic in name and appearence and speak Spanish frequently in the presence of others and speak English with a noticeable accent. So no one would assume that the Mexican born/raised folks have not always been American while the hispanic, always American familes get asked on occassion if they are really Mexican.

Even more interesting is that one of the colony ladies is married to an American hispanic. Most people assume he got his American citizenship through her but the reverse is true.

When a colony person had a son called to a Mexican mission, he had to learn Spanish even though his mother was fluent. When one of the hispanic families had a son called on a mission, he had to learn French even though he was near fluent in Spanish.

Seems like the LDS colony saints are Mexican in citizenship only though I could be wrong as I'm basing this on a few families in my ward. I didn't even know most of them grew up in the colonies until I became good friends with one family and we started talking about ancestors. I have a notable ancestor that immigrated to the colonies when they were founded and then word got out and that's when people revealed that they were born and raised in the colonies. I'm kind of fascinated by it although my direct ancestors stayed in Utah. So I have these colony people discussing ancestors and possible relations with me and I cannot figure it out because polygamy really complicates family lines.

I just thought it interesting that these people who fit totally in the LDS American profile were born and raised in Mexico while Spanish speaking hispanics I was acquainted with were born and raised in American. Just seems like culture is a stronger identifier then country.

How many mormons are still down in Mexican colonies?

Also, I'd like to see them illegally immigrate to Utah County en masse and see what everybody there says.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I think just about every person from the colonies I met on my mission looked like that.

Most of them hold dual citizenship.
