There' a house in my town that always has an anti-Obama message on the lawn. The latest one is over the top, though. It says:

"Don't Re-Nig in 2012."

Is there a palpable degree of racial tension in your hood? I recall your mentioning your locale in the past but I'm unfamiliar with local politics? Seems like a risky public statement to be making on one's own lawn.

Sick. I am an avid avocate of getting this President an ex-President. When I hear this stuff I cringe in thinking someone else who feels the same goes into the gutter to express it.

I personally wish President Obama's policies were different than mine. As a person, I would love to have him in my neighborhood or golf group. His example as a husband and father is superb.

While most of the conservatives in my area are of the good neighbor variety, there is a strand of backward redneckness. Two towns that are 20 minutes away from me have white supremecist groups. Back in 2007, some idiots about an hour from me registered a P.O. box for the KKK. One of the last "legal" lynchings occurred about an hour from me (and although that lynching was back in the 1960s, all of the black people in the area know about it and won't so much as drive through that town).

Anyone who has spent time in small midwestern towns knows exactly what I'm talking about when I refer to "backward redneckness."

When I lived in Iowa (a historically progressive state), I was surprised that when I ventured into some of the smaller towns, I often saw rebel flags being flown.

I served my mission in Chicago - if I recall correctly, you're out in that neck of the woods. North of Chicago is a town called "Zion", ironically. We had a black elder in our mission who I was told was run out of Zion in a high speed chase. I'm pretty sure it wasn't just a mission legend, because the elder was still in my mission when I was there (although I didn't know him and didn't confirm it directly with him).

I forgot you that were in Chicago. I served in one of the wards that covered Zion (although I didn't serve in that town). I went out there a few times. The whole town was black, IIRC.
