  • "Obesity" "doubles" in Utah in last 15 years...

    http://www.ksl.com/?nid=960&sid=16273164

Coincidentally, the official definition of "obesity" changed 15 years ago, and the number of "obese" Americans doubled overnight...

"When the CDC changed the definition in 1997, 30 million Americans who had been of normal weight now found themselves to be obese, all without gaining a pound." ( http://heartdisease.about.com/od/die...besity_bad.htm )

    Nothing to see here...

How much of this is attributed to all the Californians who have moved here?

I find this coincides with the increase of Ute fans over the last 15 years. They win a couple BCS games and look at them now.

I remember when that changed. It was based solely on a revised height/weight chart, but did not account for muscle mass. It placed Karl Malone (at 6'9" and 278#) solidly in the 'obese' column. KM had a ~5.5% body fat ratio at the time and looked like he had been chiseled out of stone.

This is true, but they used the current definition in the study. That is, they recalculated 90s obesity rates based on modern standards and the BMIs reported at the time. So the changed definition wasn't a contributing factor to the growth. As santos alluded, I think the primary factor is probably sociodemographic change.

I am down to 189 and still considered obese according to the chart. At this weight I am chubby and I won't be ticked when the grandkids call me fat.

However, this is another example of the government using "stupid" statistics. I don't need some "idiot" chart to tell me whether I am obese or not.

Simple observation tells me we're an overweight society.

                I mean we are faaaaat.

Not only are we fat, we are fat billboards. I noticed this in particular at the Washington airport after returning from my European junket. From seeing only a handfull of obese people a day on the Continent, it was 50% here in the land of the free. And every one of them had two or more commercial brands plastered across chests and asses and foreheads that should not have had attention of any kind drawn to them.

I don't travel abroad, but my wife does and she observes the same thing. OTOH, she says they smoke a ton more.

This is true, and it used to be that I had a big problem with BMI because of it. Even now I'm classified right on the overweight/obese margin despite being quite fit. I've since realized that people like me are not the target demographic. If you have that much muscle mass, you are probably at least relatively aware of their health status. For 95+% of the population, BMI works pretty well. And Americans are extremely fat and getting worse all the time. It's a huge problem that will not be fixed anytime soon as our environment (mostly the cheapest and most available foods being the worst) becomes more and more toxic.

                        Your statement is ambiguous.

I live in the southeast, and the level of obesity around here amazes me. I mean the number of obese people is impressive, but the degree of obesity which some people attain is just as impressive. We're talking about people actually too big around to fit into CT or MRI scanners. It's unbelievable.

Recently I heard about a lady on the high risk OB ward who was incredibly obese. I asked how the hell she got pregnant in the first place, and the OB told me that supposedly her boyfriend had enlisted the help of two friends to hold her pannus back while he did the deed. People never cease to amaze me.

Utah is nation's 2nd LEAST obese state in the nation.

Probably helps that Utah has one of the youngest populations in the country.
