  • Raising children...

    http://www.usnews.com/news/blogs/was...are-right-wing

If you want your kids to become Republicans, take them to 4th of July parades in small towns. The study and article don't say anything about what people can do if they want their children to become Democrats, but I assume the obvious things like sending them to college, teaching them about tolerance and community, and keeping them away from NASCAR will do the trick.

If you want your kids to be democrats, tell them you are a democrat. This seems to work well enough. It also helps if they are never made to hold a real job.

I've raised one and I didn't do any of the above

I may be small, but I'm slow.

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to, "The United States of America ", for an amount of "up to and including my life - it's an honor."

Well, we don't really have much say. Parents have a big effect on whether kids identify as R or D, but they have little effect on the kid's actual political beliefs.

I thought the answer would be that if you want to raise your kid as a Democrat then you send them to Gay Pride parades in large cities.

I concur with the idea that most kids (when kids) tend to identify with the political party of choice of their parents. However, I don't know that this drives their eventual political leanings.

To be quite honest - I'm done with both political parties. Neither of them fully represent what I believe. In the end I'm forced to vote for individuals that I believe have some level of integrity and tend to stand where I do on the issues that are most important to me. That means that sometimes I've voting for a Democrat and others a Republican. I'm tired of both parties seeming to be more interested in being in power than in actually doing anything with the power once they get it.

From the abstract of the paper:

Our method uses daily precipitation data from 1920-1990 to proxy for exogenous variation in participation on Fourth of July as a child. The estimates imply that days without rain on Fourth of July in childhood increase the likelihood of identifying with the Republicans as an adult, voting for the Republican but not the Democratic candidate, and voter turnout. Our findings are significant: one fourth of July without rain before age 18 increases the likelihood of identifying as a Republican at age 40 by 2 percent,
the share of people voting for the Republican candidate at age 40 by 4 percent, and the share of people turning out to vote at age 40 by 0.9 percent. The evidence is consistent with childhood experience having foundational effects less susceptible to adult political influence.
So if it rains then all bets are off.

Also, where is the research on attending a flag burning?

You might be a redneck if you've had a fungus named after you that you didn't discover.
