  • Austan Goolsbee: I'm Gonzo!

Austan Goolsbee is leaving the administration, apparently out of frustration:

More than ever, the atmosphere in Washington seems so laced with toxicity that policymakers have largely given up merely debating how to spur the economy, cognizant that any approach will be deemed politically impossible.

This, suggest policy-watchers, appears to have played at least some role in prompting Goolsbee to finally throw it in and head back to the University of Chicago to resume his academic career. He felt frustrated and tired of seeing what he viewed as necessary policies sacrificed to the imperatives of political positioning and compromise.
This is too bad. I liked Goolsbee's videos where he would attempt to make the complexity of our nation's economic situation understandable to laypersons. He was pretty good at that. I'm sure that his students will be happy to have him return, but it has got to suck for the admin.

Agree. Goolsbee was a draw for economy-first centrists like myself - in fact, lucking into sitting in on a 1 hr chat between Goolsbee and a few journalists (no humblebrag, just anecdotal) in a hotel room in Denver in 2008 was one of the points that made me think that maybe, just maybe, I'd vote for Obama. Once Obama added the Romers and Summers I was almost there -

Then he got into office and ignored all that deep economic background, handed the lead on stimulus to Pelosi-Frank-Waxman, the first in a series of irresponsible choices made re the economy.

His pragmatist cred started to fade.

Obama is running himself into a one term. This is disappointing to me as I have such high hopes for him
