    Huh?

I mean - I love being on posters and I am something of a pinup sensation, but that's more to do with my perfectly shaped posterior than any penchant for the negative. Viking, I really really want you to be right - and I hope like hell you are. I want us to be launching to full, sustainable recovery that looks so good by 2012 that the Republican candidate is nothing but a sacrificial slaughter.

But whatever tenuous hiring trends suggest right now, I don't believe that the fundamentals add up. We'll see.

Of course S&P is all in on Vike's bull market on negativity - so much so that "negative" is the adjective they used to describe US debt two weeks ago.

But Paul Krugman says that is "no big deal". Of course, when Krugman says stuff like this I start to worry.

Unemployment is now back up to 9%. About 244k jobs were added in April. According to this link from Drudge, about 62k of those jobs were added by McDonald's.

There has been so much talk in Washington and in the news about the national debt, terrorism, wars and healthcare that one might think these are the issues that most concern Americans in 2011. But opinion polls consistently show that none of the...

I'm not sure if those 62k jobs were part of the April total or not, I don't know how these stats are compiled. If a quarter of these jobs are from McDonalds -- yikes.

It also sounds like McDonalds got something like a million applications.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

The hiring environment for college grads is white hot right now. 76% of S&P500 reporters as of thurs had beaten expectations. Yet, we only hear from shills about how terrible things are.
You sound like Jim Kramer circa 2007. But you're in the business and I'm sure you'll know when to sell and there will come a time when you have to sell.

There are large parts of the world that aren't in recession (or whatever you call what the US is in right now). I would expect the S&P 500 companies to do fine since most of them have significant operations outside of the US.

I read somewhere that the average employee age at McDonalds is now 29. About 5-6 years ago it was like 22.

MCD hires were not counted in the report, fwiu.

Per zerohedge, an overwhelming majority of those other 'new' jobs were attributed to Birth Death adjustment, and that most of the jobs lost were full time, and most jobs added were part time or temporary.

How does that factor in the bullshit calculation?

                      Zerohedge...that place is a joke.

They could win the lottery and report it as "New York State funds face crisis due to lottery losses"

Again, the only bull market out there is the bull market in negativity, largely coming from the right

The right isn't producing that 9% unemployment number right now. The right also isn't producing the horrible numbers re real estate and the awful GDP numbers. The right also didn't cause nearly a million people to apply for McDonald's jobs.

Of course telling everyone to buck up sounds like a great campaign strategy for the Democrats, it worked like a charm last November.

I don't know how real the new jobs number is, but the unemployment number doesn't bother me at all (this month). Every Economist I've heard for the last year has said this would happen. As the economy starts to recover, people who had been out of the job search market will get back in, causing the rate to rise. So this is actually a good sign. It means people mow think there is a chance to get a iob, and have started looking again.

Hopefully that's true, but the overall unemployment number until last month was declining because people were dropping out from looking for a job. If what the economists' you cited said is true, then it would be a pretty quick change. And the actual number of jobs produced is not even close to enough to start really eating away at the unemployment.

My general feeling about all of this is as follows -- there were WAAAAY too many people involved with the real estate industrial complex during buildup to the real estate bubble. Normally, we probably don't need half of the contractors, subs, construction workers, realtors and mortgage brokers that were actually involved in that industry circa 2006. That's a sizeable segment of the employment in a lot of areas of the country. It takes time for other sectors of the economy to grow to accommodate these people. The cascading effect of the bursting asset bubble has caused closely associated businesses to suffer. Consumer spending declined because people could no longer take out HELOCs to go buy a new car.

This all started around the last quarter of 2007. We are past the nadir. But things are still a long ways away from, say, the economic conditions that existed around 04 or 05. I've said in other threads that one of the worst parts about the real estate bubble was the fact that it didn't really leave any structure in place that may create new jobs and new wealth. The tech bubble at least left over a massive technology infrastructure and out of the ashes of that mess rose companies like Google.

I don't disagree. The general consensus from what I have heard is that we will have elevated unemployment levels for at least the next couple of years. As long as job creation is strong, though, the unemployment won't prevent economic recovery.

Right, they're the dumbfucks who kept a ZIRP then allowed banks to run amok which caused the horrible numbers re real estate and the awful GDP numbers.
