Future U of U president thread

The business of a university is business--Calvin Coolidge. My first choice for U of U president is Jon Hunstman Jr. Not an acadmic you say? These days in choosing a president great universities often as not focus on administrative and fund raising acumen more than scholarly distinction. UW cosidered Gary Locke, who has similar credentials--former governor, ambassador to China, etc. (I don't know whether UW or Locke decided not to go that direction since Locke is presently on Obama's cabinet.)

Yes, Huntsman is running for president, but the odds do not favor him. Let's put a solid interim president in there and see what happens in the election.

I think JHHjr is a fabulous idea. BTW, not be uuuuh, brag or anything but my Uncle has twice turned the job down. Which saddened me because think of the ticket hookup I would have had.

I've been part of a search for a vice-president, which has some similarities. There will likely be a search committee with representation from various factions within the University and from the Board of Regents/Trustees. The search committee will make a recommendation to be accepted/rejected by the BOR.

As an undergrad I worked as an intern in the President's office under Art Smith. It was an idea that he brought with him from USC (gamecocks). We got to see some of the inner workings of how a state univeristy works with lectures from the vice presidents, legislature interactions, plus many of the fundraising/PR stuff. I helped on the search for the VP for student affairs.

I expect the search to take about a year. From what the newspaper is reporting the current VP for health sciences, Lorris Betz, has been tabbed to be the interim president. He was planning on retiring from his VP position this year.

Here in Seattle they're loving Michael Young. Today he's on the front page of the Times, bearded, astride his Harley, and holding two grand kids. He's been on the front page every day since last week.

Seriously, I'm glad to hear this, but the one article from a Seattle newspaper that I read following his announcement had endless comments bashing him and the LDS Church with much enthusiasm. I found the comments funny and predictable, but utterly contrary to the liberal openmindedness I thought was ingrained in all Washingtonians.
