It wasn't a trade! It was an excellent decision immediately followed by a poor one.

Seems like you would have to do a lot to get banned around here (minus spoilers for the GoT that is).

You're right, cougjunkie's continued existence here is proof that you can say despicably horrible things to people without consequence. I stand corrected.

I spotted RF as a well intended person with above average intelligence who unfortunately didn't know shit from shinola when it came to economics. President Obama reminds me of RF.

Look at two responses to a crash. RF, the market tanks wiping out people's 401K's.

Warren Buffet's response to the crash in '87. A reporter asked how it feels to lose billions. Buffets reply was, I haven't lost anything. I won't bore you with the back and forth and the reporters naiveness when it comes to markets, but Buffet's last comment was, I haven't sold so I haven't lost anything.

Those who had 401K's and didn't sell have their money back. Besides if they kept contributing, they have had a great run with the money they have been adding. My kids were just getting going with their 401K's in '07. They have done great and regardless of how old you think I am, they aren't baby boomers.

It isn't all luck why some people do well in a capitalist society and others wallow and whine.

RF reminds me a bit like John Stewart...or maybe a little less smarter John Stewart. If you haven't seen it, I recommend you watch the unedited version of the John Stewart interview with Timothy Geithner. It's pretty interesting to see how hard headed the liberal mindset can be. Stewart constantly asks Geithner why he didn't take a different approach to the bailout....like giving the money to the public in the form of principal reduction instead of bailing out the banks. Geithner tells him in about 4 different ways that they couldn't do that without Congressional approval and they didn't have support for it in Congress....so they did what they felt they should do and what they could do. Stewart seems a pit perturbed that Geithner didn't just do it, even without the proper approval.

When it comes to the markets, you make money on volatility more than anything else. You are correct that the best way to make money in the long term is to keep investing even when markets are going down. A good investor would have come out of the recession with a decent sized unrealized gain. A bad investor would have ended up with a good sized realized loss and a lot of bitterness.

IIRC, RF didn't sell when the market crashed. He bought more. Maybe you have him confused with someone else.

I have not seen the Jon Stewart interview with Geithner but that being said, Treasury was given wide latitude to do as it pleased with TARP funds. In fact, TARP was pitched and signed under the idea that they would purchase troubled assets from banks, but what they ended up doing with those funds was purchasing billions of dollars worth of preferred stock from banks. Once the bill was passed, they did not seek or need support from Congress to use the money in this way and could have just as well used the TARP authority to buy mortgages from banks and then refinanced and reduced principal. It is very undersandable why Stewart would have pressed Geithner on this.
