The Rexburg police department is moaning because some of their federal grant money is going to be cut. Shouldn't providing your own police and fire department be funded locally or at worst on a state level. Is their any chart that shows federal money paid in by a state and how much each state benefits?

I am in the crosshairs of my city countil to annexed due to the loss of money from the state, which I think the state is reacting to the loss of federal money.

All the data indicates that those who hate the feds the most also recieve more than those who don't.

Those that hate the fed usually hate the fed because the fed took a great deal of the real estate. I'll bet most of that revenue is PILT. Certainly as a dyed in the wool progressive shouldn't you believe that the wealthiest land owner in the intermountain west states should be honored to pay the most property taxes!

How well I recall my exile in Onieda County, and the weeping and wailing and gnashing of "tooth" when PILT monies were threatened.

The city basically existed off federal block grants as well. Nonetheless those folks hated them some federal gub'ment.

Oh and I'm sure you heard the cries clear out your way when CRP was scaled back. It was interesting to see how many farmers who hadn't farmed in 10 years suddenly became staunch advocates for sharp tailed grouse habitat. We called them welfare brothers.

The PILT issue makes my ass burn. The preponderance of the federally owned land in Power County is within the Rockland School Distric boundaries, but the Power County Commissioners finance their county off of PILT revenues and we don't see a red cent of it trickle on down to our school district. I wanna start my own revolution sometimes, but then I just change my mind.

I have learned that almost all politicians become convinced of the greatest good for the greatest amount once they get into office. It is a rare politician who even at a City Council is willing to limit his or her own power. Of course they all know their intentions are pure, but certainly love to howl when the same philisophical perspective they use to guide their decision making processes is used on the federal level.

As for me I like to quote ol Scrooge McFlinders: "Are there no poor houses? Let them die so as to decrease the surplus population. ZERO POPULATION IS THE ANSWER MY FRIEND..WITHOUT IT THE REST OF US ARE DOOMED!"

Well jump into county level politics in your area and you'll see that the smaller entities can't so much as replace a culvert without PILT money. Ask a county commish if he'd rather have the land (and maintainance of it) or a big check from the gub'mint every year on his books.

Those vast tracts of BLM land to the west of both you and I have ZERO value. ZERO.

As we have previously established farmers can whine like the best of 'em. I would guestimate that 66% of the farmable dry farm land in my valley is in CRP. I understand that agricultural subsidies likely have a short shelf life in our brave new budget cutting world. God bless 'em!

They set up a barrel on the south side of town for hunters to put wings in. I have never looked inside. Don't usually see a bunch of cats hanging out in the area either so perhaps not well. We do have a kid from U of I phinishing up his phd studying the grouse. He agreed to go home teaching, which is probably more than what you give.

He tells me the biggest threat to the grouse in Nevada are all the mustangs but it ain't likely the herds will ever be thinned. Rich people from the east feel good about themselves when mustangs roam free.

I volunteered to teach a number of select families in Malad, but my message was not well received. I've no idea why...

So the family has some ground in Box Elder County. 40 acres of flood-irrigated topsoil with a water right that dates back to Brigham Young. The patriarch stumbles upon a federal program that will pay him 100% of the cost of a pivot on this already gravity-fed ground not half a mile dowstream from the resorvoir.

Of course he applies for the welfare. I should note he is a very conservative republican, and a personal friend of Bush I. As a member of the family board of trustees I am required to sign off on this boondagle.

I tell him it ain't right.

He tells me the money will go to waste if we don't get it.

I tell him I think our project is the waste.

Of course I give in after teaching him a valuable object lesson, to which he humbly submitted.

Then last year the power company came through with 3 big towers and they paid us to tear the pivot back out. How can you not love this country?
