All true. The rest stops have bathrooms nicer than a 4-star hotel (I'm serious). The playgrounds are also nice, especially for my little kids.

FTR, we ate at Dairy Queen in Clayton, NM and the guy behind the counter asked me about Jimmer (I was wearing a BYU hat). Clayton, NM!

Oops. Wrong road. I was recalling 281 to Possum Kingdom.

I've been on 287 for all of those painful Dallas to Provo 24 hour marathon drives far too often than I'd like to remember. Doctor Coug might recall some of these. Our dad's infamous "house is going to burn down" incident at my grandma's happened after one of these.

You know what is NOT awesome? Driving on I84 in Oregon. 65 mph. Through vast stretches of abso-freaking-lutely NOTHING.

And, not only is the speed limit a joke, but if you get a ticket, it's exorbitant.

All of the freeways around Portland are 55. FIFTY-FIVE!

Hawaii is the worst place in the 50 states for low speeds. Speed limits on the freeway are 55 and in many places 50. Yeah, they have some curvy freeways on the island but nothing worse than Parley's Canyon. Speed limit in Parley's is 65, with snow.

I'll vouch for this. The rest stops are superb - among the best I've ever seen, if not the best.

You might be right about speed limits, but I guaran-damn-tee you that the distances that exist in Hawaii don't compare to the distances across the state of Oregon. The 290 miles from The Dalles to Ontario or vice-versa are agonizing.

Instead of 3 and a half hours, it takes 4 and a half. It's downright awful.

Virginia's like that too, or at least that last time I was there. 65 is the top speed with lots of speed traps. Of course, it can be very pretty driving through the Shenandoah, but after having done it multiple times, often at night, all you really want to do is get to Tennessee so you can bump it up to 75+.
                Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Amen. Oregon may be the promised land for me bit that is despite the speed limit.

Virginia is a very "Wide State. If you take the freeways from the coast to TN, that is a very long drive.

I just looked it up on Google. VA looks like it could very well be worse than Oregon. Ouch.

Oregon still sucks. No matter what mpfunk says. Except for the food offerings.

Yup. Did that drive too, down 81 is it? I never though of Virginia as being the inspiration for Deliverance, but some of the locals on that drive were...um...interesting.

                        Yup, that's it.

Coming from DC, once you get through the hills into the Shenendoah near Front Royal, a whole new world appears.

I've done the run from DC to Chattanooga so many times, before and after marriage. You can see an LDS chapel just east of the interstate in Bristol, VA, in case you were curious. There's also some rocky hills just south of Blacksburg (I think) where local college kids have left their marks via various painted messages. Also, the counties south of Knoxville have very liberal fireworks laws, so stock up there.

Final story. After our wedding, we packed up the car to make the trip from Chattanooga to our new home near DC. What a cry-fest. Her mother, her sisters, her dad. mrs. myboynoah herself cried all the way to and well into Virginia.

That stretch of interstate has a lot of memories.

Interesting, I think the westward drive on 84 is absolutely beautiful across the entire state.

I agree with PU, I've driven that stretch once and it sucked balls. I think there was less around there than the stretch between Primm (Nevada-California state line) and Baker and the speed limit was ridiculous and they really do ticket people there for going to 2-3 mph over.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I don't know. You get to see the mountains, the farmland, the rolling hills, the CR Gorge.

I've driven it quite a bit. It sucks until you get to the Dalles, then it's beautiful. We drove the old Columbia River Gorge highway and stopped at Crown Point. It was a fantastic day and I don't think I've ever seen a more beautiful lookout than I did from Crown Point. Absolutely fantastic view. Ours looked even better than this...
