Official Romney for President Exploratory Committee Thread
You have no charisma, you talk out of both sides of your mouth and you come across as what you are: a child of privilege. Oh, and I think most of your wealth was likely made by another guy's leadership (Bob Gay) and not yours.
Viking, I heard a rumor when I lived in Boston that Bain Capital would leverage their way into a company, liquidate it, then demand to be bought out afterwards. Something like that. Is that possible, or true in any way?
Mormon, Masscare, slashing taxes while jacking registration fees through the roof, etc., will combine to bury him.

Yes, Romney is wasting his money. Huckabee will say, in his innocent voice, "Don't mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?" or mention that Romneycare smells a lot like Obamacare and kill his chances with the deep rooted christian conservatives (aka. Tea Party'ers) anyway. Of course, given estate taxes and a net worth of ~$200M he might as well blow all his money on something before he dies rather than give a large chunk to the IRS. Estate taxes just gives an incentive for rich people to be stupid with their money while they are alive I guess.

Name a politician who doesn't do this. Ready.... Go!
I think Mitt would be a very good president. He's also a very good human being. So I am in, and have been since about 2005. If Mitt is stopped, it will not be because of Romneycare or his past liberal positions, although those are big problems. It will be because he doesn't connect with people on a broad scale. (Notably, his campaign workers love him a lot.) He's just not a silver-tongued back-slapping guy with lots of one-liners, like Bill Clinton or even Mike Huckabee. If Mitt can somehow find a way to address that problem he will have a very good chance of being the nominee. Whether or not he can beat Obama depends on the economy going into 2012.
I don't think his Mormonism will make the difference in the primaries. It could be huge in the general.

I'm gonna have to uh...go ahead and disagree with you there counselor. I think the primary is exactly where the faith of his fathers will be exagerrated and I believe it hurt him last time around. No other GOP candidate had to craft a speech about his beliefs.
On the other hand everybody knows Obama is a muslim and he breezed on into office, so anything is possible in the great country of ours.
I also think when his opponents need to reveal a little more about Bain Capital it won't be flattering.

Well, he sure ain't gonna win Iowa or South Carolina. But now without McCain in the race Mitt has a great shot at winning New Hampshire and Florida, and probably California. So he doesn't need the Evangelical vote like he did in 2008. One of my Evangelical friends likes to point out that by voting their religion, Evangelicals are only going to end up reducing the influence they might otherwise have in the White House. Not a bad thing, IMO.

His past liberal positions could persuade me (a somewhat socially liberal guy with fiscal conservative leanings -- yes, I am aware of the natural tension there) to actually vote for him.
Romney is capable and would probably be a good enough President, but his phoniness is what gets him. In the last cycle it was like he had a checklist to be the perfect GOP candidate for all people and it just came off as ridiculous. Ironically, without the image he tried to convey in 2008 he would probably be well-positioned now given his financial background.
Truthfully, the guy that really gets it is Mitch Daniels. I appreciated his candor/strategic sense in telling everyone in the GOP to call a truce on social issues because there were far bigger fish to fry on fiscal and economic issues. He also said that defense spending shouldn't be some untouchable sacred cow. That took some courage and I think he's spot on. I can't imagine Mitt Romney doing something similar in preparation for a campaign.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
I honestly don't understand why he's accused of not having charisma. Maybe he's not the most charismatic, but he doesn't lack it compared to other politicos.
And I think RomneyCare, not Mormonism is what is his biggest hurdled to becoming the republican nominee.
