This is why even though I wasn't convinced it had any staying power or was going to create any meaningful value, I was happy to see DOGE become a thing. Feels like death by a thousand papercuts and nobody wants to do anything about it.

The interest payments on this debt now exceed defense spending and the US treasury has been downgraded from AAA to AA. Seems like these events should be massive warning signs that deserve priority attention over other stupid social-issue fluff. I am starting to consider voting only for federal candidates who give this serious discussion.

The alternative is we could just tax religion like Sooner said and resolve it in a few months, but ain't nobody got time for that.

The dems have been less shitty with the budget despite it being framed as a bedrock of the GOP.

That's not me saying they are great with that either

I think it will be a combination of the two along with higher taxes. We can't maintain this trajectory forever.

Isn't defense spending dwarfed by entitlements? And people want a single payer healthcare system on top of it?

Well, the US Government already spends about $1.5 trillion annually on health care. That is about $5000 per person.

That is pretty close to what most single payer systems pay per capita.

Since 2000, Democratic administrations have consistently expanded the size and cost of the federal government, driving overall spending far beyond Republican levels.

Over roughly 13 years in power, Democrats have added about $61 trillion in federal outlays—nearly $20 trillion more than Republican administrations during the same period. Their budgets have repeatedly relied on large stimulus programs, social spending expansions, and debt-financed initiatives that have pushed federal spending and deficits to record highs.

This also include the massive COVID stimulus from Trump and Biden but over the 20-years in power they have been shitty with the budget.

So how does the deficit chart look over that period?

The democrats add to the debt by spending and the republicans add to the debt by tax cuts and also spending. I don’t see any downward trends in your chart except a short one during the Biden era because of the Covid spike right before it.

That chart shows that federal expenses increased under GWB, were mostly kept at GWB levels under Obama, and drastically increased under Trump.

Is it just me or are the colors/labels on that chart messed up? Blue says “Republican admin” and red says “Democrat admin” but Obama was president from 2009 to 2017 which is colored blue.

I scratched my head also. I wonder if they're classifying the years by which party controlled congress.
