Or, conversely, teach them to fight. My only sister was the baby of the family. In first grade she got "tagged" by a boy who was playing kissing tag. She punched him right in the face the way we taught her, and broke the kid's nose.

She got suspended for a few days, Mom was furious, but Dad, my brothers, and I knew she was tough enough to take care of herself.

Well that, and the fact that she chose high-quality people as friends, are choices that served her well.
