BYU Donations

My dad has worked for the development office for most of his professional life. Even though he has raised missions for byu, he was considered a church employee and not a byu employee. So that meant full tuition for me while a janitor's kids got 1/2 tuition. I will never give to byu till they pay me back for the 7 semesters of 1/2 tuition they owe me.

To be fair it also probably meant a higher salary for him, but I'm with you. Nothing but the AD will ever get a donation from me.

If it makes you feel any better, the church still subsidized about 90% of the actual cost of your education.

The dept. chair I had to work with when I graduated (social family sciences or whatever that pos dept is called) was such a flaming ass hat that I never will. I am a small and petty person.

Edit: It was the Pl Sc dept chair who was the total F-tard.

I'm waiting to get my tuition back too. I graduated from BYU twice and wasn't married either time, but I still haven't received a cent.

You mean you didn't get your letter in the mail exempting you from tithing for five years? Mine was very sincere, I especially liked the "We're sorry we failed you" that they closed with.

My reasoning is pretty petty as well. I had completed all the required courses I needed for graduation, I was just short my internship (which I had lined up). Because I was taking it during the summer, I had to register an additional semester. I had two options, sign up for a half credit class at about $100 or sign up for a 4-credit class for around $450. The work done was the same. The only difference between the two classes was the cost of $350. Given that I was working two jobs and paying my own way, I really would have preferred the $100 option. But the Dean of my College denied my petition to take the half credit hour class, even though I had enough school and department credits (I took extra department classes when I was there over electives I didn't care about because I actually valued learning about the subject material).

Is it petty of me? Probably. But it really left a sour taste in my mouth as I was leaving the program, and I haven't wanted to donate back since.

I give to the School of Accountancy every year. I owe them a lot for getting me to where I am right now with a good job and some marketable skills. I want my program to continue to succeed and one oft owe ways is by donating. So far my small contribution has helped keep them high in the rankings, which helps increase my marketability.

I'd also never give to the general fund.

Since a few have asked me via pm what caused the director of the traffic office to call me a liar, I'll answer.

Long story short, I had sold my car and forgot to take the license plates off before the new owner took possession. They got several tickets on campus and the bill came to me. I had already moved away from UT, was in graduate school and I get a call (yes, they called me) from the traffic office saying I had unpaid parking tickets and that they had put a hold on all of my records that would remain there until the tickets were paid.

After the initial confusion was cleared up (how could I have gotten a ticket, I wasn't in Utah?), they told me that I had to provide documentation that the car had been sold. They said that the amount was significant ($200) and they couldn't take my word for it because students often lied to get out of traffic tickets. Needless to say, getting the tickets cleared up was not a priority for me while in graduate school. I was content to let the petty traffic office send me bills every month.

Fast forward five years. I was getting close to finishing and was looking at going on the job market. My adviser informed me that I might need a copy of my undergraduate transcript for some applications, which meant I needed to get things squared away. I got the documentation from UDOT, but the fool I sold it to had lost the title (which is why he waited so long to register it) and had to apply for a title. All of his application documents were handwritten, all of which had official Utah State Seals on them, saying they had been photocopied by UDOT.

I sent all the documents, highlighted important dates, etc. along with a letter of explanation asking them to dismiss the tickets. I got an email a few weeks later from the director (why he took the time to review my case is beyond me) which stated something to the effect of I don't believe that these documents are genuine, I think you made up the application and so I'm not going to approve your appeal.

I was furious and I immediately called the director. I was calm on the phone, but the director, as soon as he heard my name, said "Ah yes, Mr. pellegrino, our document expert." I was quite taken aback and I asked him if he had seen the page from UDOT that came with the photocopies and certified the copies. He went silent for a moment and I heard papers shuffling. He asked me to hold for a moment, which I did. When he came back he didn't apologize, he didn't admit he was wrong, he just said that he would have to review it further.

A week later, I received an email from someone else in the department saying that the appeal had gone through and that my account had been cleared.
