    *#$&@*!

I sat down in a hot tub with my phone in my pocket yesterday. Realized it pretty quickly, immediately took out the battery, put it in a bag of rice and left it over night. Tried it again this morning, and it will turn on, but won't do anything. Any ideas?

I've read about an alcohol bath if it wasn't dropped in pure water. That makes me a little nervous, but I guess it's worth a try at this point.

If not, I'm probably in the market for a cheap Android phone, as I have to pay $280 to get out of my contract. Any suggestions?

It may be less expensive to keep your contract and buy a (used) phone off ebay or something.

Yep. Smaller screen that the Droid x, but I have been happy so far.

I'm guessing you're on Verizon, right? Have you heard anything about Sprint's coverage around here? I'm thinking that I might make up the $280 to get out of my contract pretty quickly by switching to Sprint.

I am on Verizon. With the travel that I do, I need the expanded coverage. In town Sprint is ok. Out of the immediate area, well.......Sprint is better than at&t though.

It's funny...the place I work the most often (away from here) is a complete AT&T town. Apparently, Verizon has some legal battle that I don't understand with the local mobile providers so I can't get coverage anywhere. Consequently, it's filled with those annoying Apple cultists (think Uncle Ted... ).

Yeah, this is what I'll probably do. Maybe this is when I make the plunge into the iPhone world (although even used, these are ridiculously expensive).

On a side note, for taxes, if I want to write this off, does it look suspicious to have an ebay or ksl.com purchase? Probably not, but I've always hesitated a little to buy business items when I can't produce an official-looking receipt.

If you pay by check and put a notation in the memo field, you should be covered.

I got an used iPhone from a guy once for my wife (after she killed her old one). The guy included the original receipt as well.

OK...so just to entertain the possibility...
If I were to buy a used iPhone, do I have to jailbreak it to get it on my Verizon plan, since it was likely purchased when it was on AT&T? How big of a deal is that, for a non-computer person like myself?

With AT&T iPhone jailbreaking and unlocking are two different things. Jailbreaking allows one to install and run apps that are not available in the Apple iTunes store for some reason or another. Unlocking allows one to install SIM cards of a different carrier so the iPhone can be used on a different network.

CDMA based carriers (such as verizon) don't use SIM cards. Instead they have ESN (electronic serial numbers) can't be (easily) changed. To activate a CDMA phone on their network they add its ESN to is approved list. Therefore, the provider is in full control of allowing you to use a phone on their network. I am guessing that verizon will most likely make you switch to an iphone plan. They may give you some kind of price break or something, however.

My suggestion would be to never get in a hot tub again with any clothes on.
