This Rush Limbaugh/GOP cartoon is freaky.....

but it reminded me of the Paranoid Android video:

        Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Trudeau is often a self-important blowhard (I recall recall reading, about him having a public tantrum, when Garfield's artist was given some honor. Come on Odie, lasagna, John- funny stuff) but Doonesbury has been a must read for 4 decades. Our local paper has elected to not run this particular sequence about the Texas abortion bill. A few of the lines, are a little much ("By the authority invested in me by the GOP base, I thee rape"), but so is the Texas law (IMO).

Sorry Art, but Trudeau is spot on about Garfield. It is an abomination.

But I will admit that if you remove Garfield from the strip, it is kind of funny.

I was joking. Garfield is terrible. However, my kids love it. I just thought it was petty for someone like him to make such a public stink about what is obviously meant to be a kid's cartoon.

Trudeau is horrible and boring. We had a thread here somewhere about that Garfield-less Garfield. Those are great. Jon is crazy.

Doonesbury, like beer, takes a little effort to enjoy, but it is worth it. You need to learn the characters and their back stories to really appreciate what is happening, otherwise it will be boring, because you are missing most of the picture.

I have to quibble with this. Bear in mind I was reading Trudeau when you were very little, or maybe even before you were at all. When he was young, Trudeau was fresh and entertaining and had somethign to say. Now he hits the same few notes over and over and even those arent very good. Some fo his stuff is still relevant and every now and then he hits a good one, but he is a shadow of his former self. (Really, he was never the same after the sabbatical.)
                        PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Hitting the same notes? He has characters dealing with the serious physical and emotional damage from their involvement in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has done important work relating to the Arab Spring, American elections, media, Abu Ghraib, education policy... just too many to list. He invents original ways to address issues. As an example, rather than dealing with the Sarah Palin phenomenon via Palin herself, he addressed the issue of Palin's appeal as a strong female role model by having some conservative parents give their daughter a 'Talking Sarah Palin' doll that went on to try and lead a 'tea party' revolt among the girl's other toys. That is fresh and original. One of the current story lines involves the romantic relationship between a returned Iraq war vet with brain damage and a blinded eye with Doonesbury's MIT educated daughter. The story line addresses PTSD, socioeconomic differences in the relationship, shifting social trends (the girl proposes to the guy), youth culture, etc. The strip has maybe thirty deeply developed characters, many partly developed characters, and it frequently introduces new characters (as well as killing off a few old ones along the way). Stories draw upon these characters' complex backgrounds.

In short, no other strip is doing anything nearly as ambitious as what Doonesbury does, and Trudeau is at the peak of his game. What are the 'same few notes' that you see him hitting today? I see a LOT of notes being hit in a lot of creative ways.

I am glad you enjoy it so much. I missed the Palin story line and perhaps that was the renaissance moment that puts my opinion in peril. I cede this thread (but not my opinion) to your enthusiastic response, and to the knowlesdge that I dont care about it nearly enough to trade posts with you on this topic.

I don't blame you. It would be as embarrassing to you as a contest where we would compare our feminist credentials.
