I didn't mean to mock you in any way. The statement struck me as somewhat humorous and I wondered if you meant it to be funny.

While it certainly can be true that you know little or nothing about a coworker's family, I bet you know everything about that person's church status.

I was only drawing a parallel between the American example (we are defined to a certain extent by our career), the Chinese example (we are defined to a certain extent by our family/breeding/'extraction'), and my interpretation of the Utah example (we are defined to a certain extent by whether or not we are church members, and if so, by our level of activity).

As far as being 'defined by family', I knew many people of Chinese descent who owned books detailing their genealogy going back well over 2000 years.

This whole thread gets a big from me.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Everyone here keeps asking about my family. No one wants to know where I went to school or what my job is like!!! I feel like they're not trying to get to know me as a professional. They only care about me as a person.

So puzzle me this. Why is it that virtually EVERY person I speak to in this state who is not Utah born and bred feels the same way? About the culture being so different here. And virtually every native gets offended by the notion.

Few will disagree that the culture is different. Most will disagree with your hyperbole and strange comparisons to the Chinese.

I was not born and bred in Utah.

Of course this is anecdotal for all of us ... but I must not be meeting the same people you do.

Here's another puzzle. Why can't you find something else to post about? I don't think anyone is seriously debating that Utah culture is the same as the rest of the country. But why would you expect it to be? Take a whole ton of people that come from virtually the same background and cut them off from the rest of the world for 150 years. Of course they're culture is going to be distinctly different from other cultures. I'm sure even you would not debate this.

How predictable. A thread about an observation I made (in which I clearly stated I didn't think there was anything wrong with it being that way) devolves into "FM Hates Utah!"

And of course I NEVER post about anything else.

Funny, that's exactly how I would have described this thread.

Not saying there is anything wrong with it, but it is yet another way Utah is a "peculiar" place.

                        I'm done here.

I'm a native, I agree with you, and I'm not offended by it. But then again, I got out and don't plan on going back.

I am a native and i wasnt offedned but I also havent lived there permanently for over 25 years. I also think there can be little doubt that Utah is a quirky place. OTOH, os can other places. No big deal either way, to me.

I'd be interested in his experiences that lead him to say that about China. My experiences have been quite different.

No question there's a huge fracture along religious lines in Utah, includes politics, sports, socialization, almost nothing isn't affected by an LDS/non-LDS division.

Seems to have gotten worse over the two decades I've been away.
