I was only drawing a parallel between the American example (we are defined to a certain extent by our career), the Chinese example (we are defined to a certain extent by our family/breeding/'extraction'), and my interpretation of the Utah example (we are defined to a certain extent by whether or not we are church members, and if so, by our level of activity).
As far as being 'defined by family', I knew many people of Chinese descent who owned books detailing their genealogy going back well over 2000 years.
