    Who has to work today?

Many people just took a week off around Christmas and New Years. Days like Columbus Day King day and Veterans means you can't go to the bank and the mail does not come. I think most people that don't work in those businesses work on days like today. I think Credit Unions don't have to shut down on those days.

I went to school on days like today. Some schools close. When Arizona didn't take the holiday people boycoteedd the state and they lost the super bowl. Economic blackmail.

There was a lot of good that came out of the civil rights movement. I don't know about west and North but south blacks were not treated that great. Corrective measures were needed. But I don't think people did what they did so we could get a day off.

Interesting people with poverty in vocabulary will casually say N day today. I do respect what they did and were treated bad. Don't think it is a big deal not to have a day off because of King. If a state did not celebrate Veterens or Columbus day I doubt anyone would say anything.

Are you talking about when Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald lost to Ben Roethlisberger and Troy Polamalu in January 2009, or are you talking about the city of Glendale getting shut out by the NFL? Because one answer is infinitely more enjoyable than the other.

My office is closed but I will be in there all day catching up on things that fell behind while I was out for Christmas. My family and I do watch the "I Have A Dream" speech every MLK Day.

I still get choked up every time I listen to that speech. It never gets old.

I love this holiday. What a wonderful opportunity to teach your kids and celebrate a great American story.

I worked my tail off, and am still working.

This AM I got a call from a patient from the most racist area of the country:

"I don't know why you are closed. It is just MLK." Grrrrrr
"Don't expect I'll see you 'till after the race"

"So where does the power come from to see the race to its end...from within"

Historical evidence shows that blacks were not treated that great anywhere. While there weren't codified laws outside the South, the ghettoization in the cities of the north was just as bad, especially after the influx starting in 1927.

I couldn't agree more. Our kids are still fairly young, so we've tried to teach them the ideas, while easing them into some of the harsh realities.

Birmingham is an interesting place, to be sure. I am extremely disappointed that the city (or the schools) don't do more to celebrate/remember the day, MLK, and the host of other people that contributed. A lot of those people are still alive and living here. MLK day should be one of the biggest days of the year in Bham, but it's treated a lot like Labor Day or Memorial Day.*

*EDIT: Just to be clear, Memorial Day is an important holiday as well. I just meant that MLK should have special significance here.
