Il Pad -- you should watch, record and memorize Dennis Miller's HBO special. It's truly awesome, and I'm surprised how much I'm in-line with his thinking.

Anyway, he has a bit where he talks about the areas he admires Obama. Miller is the best thing going in politics/entertainment today -- hands down.

I like Miller. There are times I don't know what the hell he's talking about, but I do enjoy his work.

Do you listen to his talk show? I think it is one of the better ones around right now, it certainly beats Hannity or Rush

I may be small, but I'm slow.

I saw this and the part about Pelosi was pretty funny.

HBO also showed a Dennis Miller special from 2006. He goes on a rant about flight attendants that's different than his rant from the Black and White special from the early 90s.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

There are some good signs about the economy (if you ignore unemployment and debt). For example, GDP seems to be back on track after it took a nasty dip during this recession. I am worried, however, if the tax cut extensions are not passed what that will do to the stock market. I am guessing it will take another nasty correction after recovering somewhat nicely this year.

There is a lot of interesting debate going on about the tax extensions but Harry Reid seems to be ignoring this problem totally and pushing for online gambling instead. He has to work for the people that got him elected, I guess.

More people are unemployed this month than last month. That's really the only factor that matters. Those folks don't see any effect of the GDP seeming to be back on track.

Obama said during the campaign that jobs was a high priority and here it is, 2 years later and things are worse.

Not that I'm still staunchly defending him, but I have to ask myself how much worse it could've been if Bush and Obama hadn't worked together at the end/beginning to make TARP happen.

I think my opinions on what I perceive President Obama's vision for America would do to the US economy are crystal clear, saying that I am not sure if I agree with you that more people are unemployed. The real unemployment percentage did not change. I think the increase in this unemployment rate is the result of more dead beats throwing their hats back into the labor market, which is an indicator that attitudes are changing. It could also be the result of many folks getting skeert that their unemployment benefits are coming to an end so they suddenly got religion and re-converted to being an active participant in the labor pool. However, when the dust settles methinks that the Democrats will get their DADT repealed and their unemployment benefits extended to infinity and beyond and the Republicans will get to stop Democrats from raising taxes. The deficit will just get bigger.

Damn robots are taking our jobs...

IN an interview on NBC News, Barack Obama used the example of ubiquitous automatic teller machines to illustrate how technological progress is allegedly impeding job creation:

"There are some structural issues with our economy where a lot of businesses have learned to become much more efficient with a lot fewer workers. You see it when you go to a bank and you use an ATM, you don’t go to a bank teller, or you go to the airport and you’re using a kiosk instead of checking in at the gate."

                          [...]

More recently, the Bureau of Labour Statistics reports there were 600,500 bank tellers in 2008, and the BLS projects this number will grow to 638,000 by 2018. Mr Obama clearly picked a poor example. It's worth noting that the advent of the ATM also created demand for ATM maintenance workers. According to the BLS, there were 152,900 "computer, automated teller, and office machine repairers" in 2008. I'm not sure how many of these are in the ATM repair biz, but the BLS expects a mild decline in this line of work due to increasingly reliable machines and declining replacement costs. Evidently, the relationship between technological advance and employment is complicated.

One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.
