  • Man spent 35 years on Death Row

Interesting. According to the article it costs around 86 dollars to execute a prisoner and 17 grand to detain them for an entire year. For some reason I was always under the impression that it cost much, much more for either option. Also, 35 years on death row? Wow.

I mean, at that point it'd be better to call it life row...

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

The high cost of death penalty cases comes from the legal process appurtenant to the sentence (mandatory appeals, etc.) not the incarceration.
      PLesa excuse the tpyos.

How in the world can it cost 17 grand a year to house a prisoner? Little cell, crappy food. Where's the cost coming from?

What's the guard to prisoner ratio?

i think those numbers likely account for overall prison overhead on a per prisoner basis, in addition to food, medical treatment, etc.

Sure, but it still seems high. Unless, as Indy points out, the guard to prisoner ratio is high.
