History is a myth agreed upon. Most people heard civil war was over slavery. That was not entire issue though freedom of the slaves was an end result of the war. Black people still did not get full rights in the south for more than a century after.
But main reason of war was wether the southern states should secede. Williams was attacking Lincoln for saying they should. Saying Davis did not want to overtake Washington anymore than Washington wanted to overtake London. had a right to secede.
Thing is if they succeeded we could very well have 50 independent states and not be the country we are. Williams talked of Blacks that fought for the confederacy. Is sympathetic to States rights. Civil war ended slavery for decades before it would of been ended. The South never was as strong economincally and most slave owners labored with there slave. Good thing that institution is dead.
I do not know why Williams would sympathise with confederate forces who wanted to seced to keep slavery legal longer. If the South won I doubt slavery would be legal today. But it ended it sooner as a result of the civil war.
And Southern forces started it by firing on Fort Sumter. Williams talked of victors rewriting history. Well I think that is there right. I am too lazy to html it but is at townhall and in the Deseret News last Wednesday. I agree with many things he writes. But not with this one.
