  • Olbermann suspended indefinitely

I don't know if MSNBC is trying to get rid of Olbermann a la NPR dumping Juan Williams, but Olbermann has clearly violated one of MSNBC's ridiculously stupid ethical standards.

Rule: Nobody at NBC News (which includes MSNBC) can contribute to political campaigns to avoid the appearance of bias.

Olby donated to 3 dems this election cycle, giving the maximum amount to each (2,400). One or 2 of them he donated to on the day they appeared on his show.

The rule may be reasonable if Olby were trying to be an unbiased journalist, but he obviously is not. The standard is stupid, so is the suspension. Just like Juan Williams.

I'd actually argue that the standard is dumb even for a real trying-to-be-objective reporter.

This is stupid. He wishes to donate so let him. No matter how many times I would like to kick him in his Gonads I still think he has a right to donate if he wishes. Its not like it is a secret what his political affiliations are...

Looks to me like he had it coming by his own standard.

It's ironic that Olbermann gave to political candidates after criticizing Fox News because its owner, Rupert Murdoch, gave $1 million donation to the Republican Governors Association. "Fox News has put its money where its mouth is," Olbermann said in an August segment that questioned the network's impartiality.

In October, Olbermann again raised the issue of Murdoch's donations, during an interview with Democratic Rep. James Clyburn. Olbermann asked whether there was "a legislative response to the idea that there is a national cable news outlet that goes beyond having a point of view and actually starts to shill for partisan causes and actually starts to donate to partisan groups of one party."

I just hope he finally gets kicked off Sunday Night Football. He's not good.

It an easy rule to follow, so he deserves to be suspended. What a POS.

My guess he is going on vacation, and this is a "convenient" time to "punish" him to avoid any culpability.

Maybe FOX News will pick him up too.

Just to be fair, I hope it is found that Bill O'Reily has done the same and he's the next to go.

Except he is suspended "without pay."

He doesn't work for MSNBC, maybe Fox doesn't have such a stupid rule.

Aside from what I said in the initial post:

MSNBC’s suspension of Keith Olbermann is ludicrous.

First, he donated money to candidates he liked. He didn’t take money, or favors, in a way that influenced his reporting.

Second, he’s not a reporter. It’s an opinion show. If Olbermann wants to put his money where his mouth is, more power to him.

Third, GE, the corporate parent of MSNBC, gives money to political organizations. GE executives and, I’m sure, NBC executives give money. Why can’t Olbermann?

Perhaps Olbermann violated NBC News “policy and standards.” But NBC doesn’t have real news standards for MSNBC—otherwise the channel wouldn’t exist. It’s a little strange to get all high and mighty now.

But there’s now a Republican House, and perhaps GE is trying to curry favor by dumping Olbermann?

Republicans of the world, show you believe in the free expression of opinion! Tell the crony corporatists at NBC—keep Keith!

I'm too lazy to do the research, but how do contributions to campaigns function in the context of the first amendment? There's got to be a ton of relevant case law

If the first amendment is relevant at all I've got a lot more studying to do.
