Bumblebees being crushed by climate change

As the climate changes, plants and animals are on the move. So far, many are redistributing in a similar pattern: As habitat that was once too cold warms up, species are expanding their ranges toward the poles, whereas boundaries closer to the equator have remained more static.

Bumblebees, however, appear to be a disturbing exception, according to a study in Science today. A comprehensive look at dozens of species, it finds that many North American and European bumblebees are failing to “track” warming by colonizing new habitats north of their historic range. Simultaneously, they are disappearing from the southern portions of their range.

“Climate change is crushing [bumblebee] species in a vice,” says ecologist Jeremy Kerr of the University of Ottawa in Canada, the study's lead author. The findings underscore the importance of conserving the habitat the insects currently persist in, says Rich Hatfield, a biologist with the Xerces Society for Insect Conservation in Portland, Oregon, who was not involved in the study. Where bumblebees vanish, the wild plants and crops they pollinate could also suffer.

      • Finally some good news on the subject of climate change...

Is a mini ICE AGE on the way? Scientists warn the sun will 'go to sleep' in 2030 and could cause temperatures to plummet

The Earth could be headed for a 'mini ice age' researchers have warned.
A new study claims to have cracked predicting solar cycles - and says that between 2020 and 2030 solar cycles will cancel each other out.

This, they say, will lead to a phenomenon known as the 'Maunder minimum' - which has previously been known as a mini ice age when it hit between 1646 and 1715, even causing London's River Thames to freeze over.

The new model of the Sun's solar cycle is producing unprecedentedly accurate predictions of irregularities within the Sun's 11-year heartbeat.

It draws on dynamo effects in two layers of the Sun, one close to the surface and one deep within its convection zone.

Predictions from the model suggest that solar activity will fall by 60 per cent during the 2030s to conditions last seen during the 'mini ice age' that began in 1645, according to the results presented by Prof Valentina Zharkova at the National Astronomy Meeting in Llandudno.

        • So I know it's not global warming, but earthquakes seem to fit in this thread. Just another sign of the times and it looks like HFN's name may be prophetic.

          • You guys who live on a coastline are doomed. Pretty sure, I'll be okay.

We conclude that continued high emissions will make multi-meter sea level rise practically unavoidable and likely to occur this century. Social disruption and economic consequences of such large sea level rise could be devastating. It is not difficult to imagine that conflicts arising from forced migrations and economic collapse might make the planet ungovernable, threatening the fabric of civilization.

I was in Baxter's fluid dynamics class the first year (or possibly the second) he started teaching at BYU. Probably the hardest class I've ever taken.

When CO2 is pumped into limewater, the CO2 binds with the calcium to form a distillate. I've wondered why this isn't used as a sequestration method. Is it because it would take too much lime, or is there another reason - anyone know? I'm going to employ this scrubbing method to burn used motor oil combined with sawdust to take the tar, creosote, and black out of the smoke, but I'm not sure if it's feasible on a large scale.

I don't know anything, but what I've generally heard in response to solutions of this kind is that the scale at which it would have to be employed to make a global difference is so unfathomably large as to make it impractical.

I thought it has been rather nice here in Texas. I have seen worse.... Like just in 2011 we had something like 70 100+ degree days!
