Hopefully it's not too big of a storm. Nothing (other than hurricanes) does more damage to power lines than a good ice storm. There is also nothing prettier than seeing the trees and bushed covered in white ice.

I once was unable to fly to Oklahoma right after they had a bad ice storm. Took me two days to find a flight and when I landed the entire city was blacked out. Some of the cars were covered (literally covered) with ice about 1 inch thick.

Do you happen to know why Southerners rush to the grocery store and stock up any time there is a winter storm warning? This is not anything I have experienced in the west.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

I assume it is the lack of things like studded snow tires and tire chains. I have a set of tire chains I keep for traveling north with. I get some interesting looks when I put them on and drive around here with them after a snow/ice storm.

Also, ice storms are nasty given they usually will knock out the power and sometimes for long periods of time. Therefore, I think Southerners like to stock up on bread, bananas, and mayo/peanut butter in case they are stuck at home with no power.

FYI, we got some snow today!

I suspect it is because the greater likelihood of things being shut down and/or people being "weathered in" for days in areas not accustomed to large amounts of snow. We experienced this is Maryland. We were once snowed in for 2.5 days. The snowplows finally came and we had just enough time to go to the store to restock our supplies before another storm snowed us in for another 2 days. The three things that were cleaned out of the stores: bread, milk, and toilet paper.

True. We had a storm in Memphis that knocked out our power for 8 days. It was in July though and we lost everything in our fridge/freezer.

I think that's more snow than we've had all winter where I live.

                    • Prof Wuap - those are pretty pictures - thats more snow than we have had here in Davis County this winter

I may be small, but I'm slow.

The ice is supposed to come later today, at least it is 70 miles north of Wuap.

Gracias. Fruit Heights will overtake us soon enough.

Well, it's raining here now, and it's freezing on contact. Not good at all.

                          • I went out this morning and found that our snow shovel was missing (my guess is it is in our neigbor's garage). I went to Home Depot to buy a new one, They had the shovels up right next to the front door, and right next to them was a large box with a sign affixed to it that said "Don't Forget the Sled!". The "sleds" were somewhat odd looking, so I took a closer look and saw that they were Washing Machine Drip Pans. I guess for a kid in the South who doesn't have much sledding experience, a drip pan is good enough.

                            • The snow and ice aren't melting, and the weather isn't looking good for the roads to clear until Friday! This is sort of awesome!

We don't have it so bad. We got a light dusting of snow. Everything has melted and the roads are fine. Are your schools closed?
