  • Homes gone in minutes.

I have learned a bit about perspective in dealing with a year of unemployment and major financial loss, but even with a great perspective, it would be really hard to lose your home in 2 or 3 minutes to an unforseen explosion. All the memories, treasures, shelter. . .my heart goes out to these people. At least nobody lost their life, at least not that the article says. http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?sec...ula&id=7659529

Terrifying. I can't imagine going through that. I'm afraid the death count will be heartbreaking when everything is sorted out.

Yikes, that would be awful! The fact that this was a 24-inch line means that it was most likely the mainline running through the subdivision adn it prpobably had the feeder distribution lines running off of it. You'd be surprised though how often there are pipeline bursts. Fortunately very few of them happen in populated areas so there is usually very little to report.

I recently had a pipeline burst about 10 miles from my house. I didn't hear or feel anything but from the news reports it left a decent sized crater and burnt the farmer's field that it ran under. The line that burst eventually runs about 200 yards from my house and also runs under the parking lot of the local Walmart.

For some interesting history on pipeline bursts, the most famous one is the Carlsbad explosion of the El Paso Natural Gas Pipeline (EPNG) which happened in 2000 and killed 12 campers. The reason for the explosion was internal corrosion that had thinned the wall of the pipe until it got too thin to contain the high pressures that continually exist in the lines. The legislative result of this rupture was an enactment by the FERC to stipulate new pipeline intergrity testing. Basically pipelines now have to periodically send small machines through the lines to inspect them for corrosion and other things.

          Smart pigs.

You would be suprised. They x-ray and UT lines at work here on a daily basis. It doesn't shock me when they shut down a location because is has pipe with wall thickness similar to that of a coke can.

On a line under 100 PSIA it isn't going to be that bad. On a line with 950 PSIA...I don't want to be within a half mile.

Yep, and pipeline companies were upset with the new regulations, not because it costs money to do the testing, but because they couldn't capitalize the costs and add it into rate base (thus giving them a higher return on regulated rates).

Obama will see this as a chance for government-owned natural gas.

Is there any chance this was terrorist related? Maybe I'm just missing it, but it was all over MSN and Yahoo earlier and now I can't find any update on it. I've been really busy this week preparing for a critical meeting that starts in an hour. I just looked at the clock on my computer and noticed it is 12:45 9/11/2010. I'm probably just being paranoid.

                  You're just being paranoid

These things are known to happen more often than you hear about them. Usually it is a case where a pipeline is hit by a bulldozer digging in the area or the pressure in the line is elevated above safe levels by mistake. Sometimes it's also just a corroded pipeline can't handle the pressure anymore (like in the EPNG case).

I still get a little edgy when things happen around 9-11. I hope it eventually goes away.

I just got an email from my daughter's dance studio. 10 families from our studio lived in the area of the blast. As of now, two of the girls homes were completely destroyed (while they were at dance class no less) and our dance academy is desperate for any news from the others.

I was reading an article linked on drudge that claims PG&E received complaints a week ago about people smelling gas. If that is true and if PG&E did nothing to try and isolate the situation, then I hope they pay big time.

I heard a little bit of a news story that was about people complaining of the gas smell last week. I agree with you that if this could have been prevented but nothing was done, PG&E should get the book thrown at them.

How was Obama at fault? Or socialism?
