And I thought his appetite was from all that swimming.Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostThe Huffington Post is reporting on this story original broken by London's News of the World:

I have long supported the legalization of marijuana (and any drug a person can grow in a pot on a balcony), so I am curious to see how this plays out. It will be an interesting barometer for the nation's attitude about this mostly benign 'drug.' Here in California where it is basically legal there is very little stigma associated with its use (with some religious communities making up the obvious exceptions), so I feel like I probably lack perspective on how the nation will react. In my eye this doesn't diminish the man or his accomplishment in the least. What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

Tim is as/more sensitive about this as I am about pioneer heritage ... I made the same mistake some years back on CB.Originally posted by SteelBlue View PostClearly I've pushed a button. I don't disagree with anything you've said in this response. Mainly that's because you've moved 180 degrees from your complete agreement with the notion that it was hard to figure out "why anyone gives a shit about Phelps smoking weed" and with the notion that you'd do it too if it wasn't for that pesky WoW."It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."

We brought her home in her car seat and place the whole thing on a chair and asked each other, "What do we do now?" The next realization was how really heavy that ball and chain was.
Then we did it three more times.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

At the risk of opening old wounds, I think we can safely assume that most folks here gave (have given) significant thought to parenting prior to parenthood and agreed then and would agree now with Tim's approach. I was 32 when we had our first, so I had given it all a lot of thought. I'm sure I drove others crazy with my thoughts on parenting prior to having children.Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostObviously everyone learns from experience. But a lot of parents, with all of their experience, never come to practice what Tim describes as his parenting philosophy. This is a shame, because Tim's future approach is obviously the best possible approach.
From Tim:
Then four children come along with four unique personalities and needs. Merely teaching one the consequences of bad choices may work, but more active guidance will be needed for the other (our current dilemma). One may be able to easily differentiate between the good and poor choices of a role model. Another may not. The emotional investment that only a parent can feel heightens our concern.Last edited by myboynoah; 02-02-2009, 01:21 PM.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

I actually have a few thoughts on this...
1. I love Tim. Not a "No on 8" type of love, but a good dude. He and I went to lunch in December on his way through. Good dude.
I have been to Elders Quorum maybe 5 times in the last 13 years due to being in YM program. I would say that 4 out of the 5 times I have heard a recently new father (child less than 2 years old) pontificate about how the raising of a teenager should go, and how they are going to raise their teenager. I actually laugh out loud and go a little Mercury Morris on them "Welcome to my neighborhood. Call me when you reach my block."
I am a much stricter parent than I ever thought I was going to be. I have actually become a better parent because of advice I have gotten from PAC and SoCalOldCoug (I am probably wrong on the name, but he lives in San Diego and he knows who he is).
2. Robin...you are FOS.
I live in god fearing Bakersfield. Pot is still a big no-no here. If my daughter smoked it I would thank her for telling me. Then go kick the shit out of the provider.
3. Mexican farming is still huge.
Expand you google search to include the Sequoia National Forest. They found 5 miles of PVC pipe in the forest for irrigation equipment. They also found Mexican illegals on Quads with AK 47's. And about 500 million worth of pot.
These are the same folks that we have seen multiple times while out fly fishing. They are the reason that I am buying a handgun and applying for a CWP.
While a handgun is no match for an AK, at least it is something.
Out of the group I fly fish with up in that area, I am the only one not strapped.
MJ is bad.

It's fun to think back on the days before I had a teen and what I thought would work. Some of it has, lots of it hasn't. If I had written a book on MY parenting ideas before I had kids I think the best title would have been "Words I'm Going To Eat".Originally posted by The_Tick View PostI actually laugh out loud and go a little Mercury Morris on them "Welcome to my neighborhood. The verdict is coming in...
So here is the beginning of the verdict. Huffpo is reporting that sponsors are sticking with Phelps. Apparently Omega's customers are a bunch of pot heads, but most of us knew that already.

So he's suspended from competitive swimmingfor three months. Talk about a slap on the wrist.
And I wonder if he's disappointed that he lost his Kelloggs contract, or relieved that he doesn't have to see his face on boxes of corn flakes anymore.
