  • The 2024 Longshoremen Strike

Unions can be beneficial. But we are now witnessing the very worst of organized labor. The longshoremen just rejected a 50% raise. They want 75% and they want a guarantee that US ports will not modernize and implement automation that would reduce costs, increase safety and efficiency, boost the US economy, and lower prices for consumers. China already has automated ports. And here we have the head of the union bragging about how they can destroy the economy and make life miserable for everyone. Oh yeah, this all comes when the south is trying to clean up from a devastating hurricane.

The last thing we need right now is for a union to screw up the economy one month before an election. Couldn’t they have waited until Harris won before striking?

I am usually pro union, but this is one that I am okay seeing people become scabs. How is 50% not good enough when most of us aren't seeing 3%?

If it's backbreaking work, the unionmembers should be paid well for it. But if automation technology exists that will reduce the wear on the body, why isn't the union for it?
If it's dangerous work, (and it is), the unionmembers should be paid well for it. But it automation would reduce the danger to the workers, why isn't the union for it?

Because they think they'd lose jobs?
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Backbreaking work? You think they unload the ships with their hands?

The Longshoreman aren't loyal establishment soldiers when it comes to the Democratic Party. They are a more progressive union but the follow their own beat: I'm not sure the strike is wise and it is less than ideal for Harris, but that might be part of the rationale knowing it is very inconvenient but also know that the Biden/Harris admin doesn't want to alienate their base/

It is 50% over 5 years. But still a lot more than most Americans will see. And they are already at the high end of the salary spectrum.

No. But the most common work injury to longshoreman comes from lifting excessive loads. Fortunately, that's not the kind of injury that leads to amputations or death, like most of the other causes of injury in that line of work.

Striking to stop automation is one of the stupidest things I can think of as a reason to strike. Of course they want to preserve their jobs, but they aren't going to stop automation from happening.

But they can extract very expensive rents on the way down.

If we had a president he would invoke the Taft-Hartley Act...

And demand the ports be automated...

So these overpaid blue collar workers can work (or watch) from home....

Last week I saw a huge automated island port next to Shanghai with very few workers on the entire island. It's obviously vastly more efficient than anything here is the states. Can't remember if Chinese dockworkers struck against automation. Probably not.
