The ONLY thing that will curtail mass shootings and gun violence is a massive overhaul of our gun laws with severe restrictions on gun ownership/licensing/etc. I don't think we have the political will to do that yet, but I think the next generation will.

What type of mass shootings are we talking about here? The school shooter or the inner city crime related shootings?

Mass shootings are more related to the so called "Gun Free Zones". The Crime Prevention Research Center says that 94% of the mass public shootings occur in Gun-Free zones. If a school, for example, is going to declare that it is a gun free zone then they need to post security guard with metal detectors at the entrances to make sure it is a gun free zone. In short, time for y'all to start paying more taxes, suckers!

I love it when people start talking about tackling root causes with gun violence, knowing full well any significant policy change wouldn’t fly in most GOP jurisdictions.

With the assault weapons ban we had for about 10 years the data showed it didn't seem to affect the overall rate of gun deaths but the rate of mass shootings did go down. Ted is probably right that the current Court would probably throw it out because they serm to be currently operating under an absolutist view that any and all regulation is unconstitutional. That's not really how the amendment really reads on its face (unlike the way the First is written-- Congress shall make NO LAw).

Didn't Fakes News publish a poll that indicated 80% support for an assault weapons ban? Are we 80% Dems now?

Every time there is a mass shooting the Dems knee jerk reaction is to put for a ban on AR-15s and other scary so called assault weapons rather than address the root causes. They are either playing politics or just too stupid to even consider the facts. The former ban on assault weapons did nothing and the current supreme court is bound to rule that it violates the 2nd amendment. Talk about ridiculous.

UT, your xenophobia about our southern border should make you more supportive of Ukraine, not less. The Russians are literally attempting to take over the country, destroy cities and infrastructure, kill massive numbers of people, obliterate their self-rule/democracy and wipe out their identity and culture. To equate our border issues with that is ridiculous.

Interesting tweet. I see how this is red meat for the racist, xenophobic base of the modern republican party, but what is the solution here from the immigrant angle? You are arguing that people will always be able to find guns. Guess what? They will always be able to sneak across the border too. Trump's fence is a really dumb idea.

Rather than blaming the gun and talk about new laws that are most likely unconstitutional maybe they should be blaming the lack of enforcement of the current laws that should have stopped these killings. Rather than spending billions on defending other countries' borders maybe the US should consider spending some money on controlling our borders, and enforcing everyone to use the proper entry points. (Build the smart wall and make Mexico pay for it!) Maybe rather than worrying about AR-15s killing young people the government should worry about the drugs spilling across our border killing our young people which is now killing over 100,000 Americans each year and is the leading cause of death of Americans between 18-45, 70% of which is due to opioids. (No, this can't be right... the scary assault weapons kill many more Americans and Alec Baldwin proved you don't even have to pull the trigger to do it!) But let's ban assault weapons, which has an ambiguous definition like that of a women. But let's talk about creating new gun laws that help insignificantly and that will just waste a lot of our tax money trying to defend it in the supreme court to have it just ruled unconstitutional in the end. Not to mention makes it easier for those that legally cannot buy any firearm to kill more people because they are always able to find guns or simply build or buy untraceable ones.
