Well, with no Republican support, Obama owns this thing. Considering the magnitude of the problem I think the public will give him a couple of years to turn this thing around (in spite of what will be a concerted effort by the minority leadership to suggest the people are growing tired much sooner). After that, who knows?Originally posted by SeattleUte View Postyou must be feeling sheepish after today. Holy moly, nothing like printing money. Eva Peron, meet Obama and his Congress.
I haven't heard a single answer to DDD's question from any of the Republican leadership, so I doubt we will hear any better alternatives from anyone here.
One thing Obama has going for him is that the people really want him to succeed. I think this means that the country will be more patient with him than they would be with all of the other presidents I have lived through. If the Republicans hope to put this all on Obama, and then blame him when things don't turn around right away, they may just find out that America's patience with this president may outlast them. If that happens then Republicans will come across as a bunch of snivelers. So its quite a gambit they are making.
I have to give the Republicans credit. They play hard ball as a minority party much better than Dems.

Honestly, I feel pretty good about my choice. I still recall McCain's agitated dithering in October, trying to exude leadership on the unfolding crisis, but displaying little of it. I saw nothing then to give me confidence he could lead us out of the mess, and I haven't seen any great ideas from the loyal opposition since.Originally posted by SeattleUte View Postyou must be feeling sheepish after today. Yes, I'm bothered by spending a cool trillion on the problem, and it bothers me a lot we're leaving the tab for future generations. But the economists I've been reading seem to agree that this kind of a spending package is the least distasteful of the choices available.
And I'm pleased Obama is showing the calm, confident leadership I expected. He's far better at inspiring confidence in the populace (nattering nabobs of negativism notwithstanding) than McCain would have been, and confidence may be the most important element in restoring the economy.
But the Republicans are in a good position here. There will certainly be flaws and shortcomings in the Obama plan, and by voting no on everything the GOP can claim later those problems could have been avoided, without having advanced a viable alternative themselves. It's standard operating procedure in politics (Dems do the same, certainly).Last edited by PaloAltoCougar; 01-29-2009, 08:41 AM.

You know how President Hinckley said he doesn't worry about those who pray? The same can be said for men who are self-aware enough to know when there's a life to be lived outside of the world of video games. - Anonymous

I am too nice, I kind of feel bad for that zinger, I meant it to be funny and it just came out bitchy and rude. As Rocky would say "I come in peace"Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostTouche.

It was totally funny. And clearly anyone that is going to challenge the bedroom customs of others has a zinger or two coming.Originally posted by Gidget View PostI am too nice, I kind of feel bad for that zinger, I meant it to be funny and it just came out bitchy and rude.
