During the debates surrounding the Bybee memoranda, I decided to prove that waterboarding was not torture. I couldn't exactly replicate the process, but as my wife dumped water down my throat, it was pure hell.

It may not be torture, but it's certainly torturous.

I guess my standard is this:

If we use the tactic in training our own people and know it to be physically safe, it doesn't match my definition of torture.

It's a tricky cost-benefit analysis. If we can save human lives by replicating what one feels when he drowns, it may be worth it.
