  • I'm Looking at the 2nd Quarter Nielsen Ratings

and almost every cable news program is down against last year's numbers. Rachel Maddow's show is up, but even the juggernaut O'Reilly is down about 8% in total viewers.

I'm still just looking over the numbers, but it sure looks like during the 2nd quarter this year, Americans watched less cable news than they did during the 2nd quarter in 2009.

So, Maddow's number rose to 0.0001 and O'Reilley's slipped to what, 83?

I think it's time for cable news to re-evaluate and get back to news rather than talk shows that are increasingly partisan.

I would be one of the many that have watched SIGNIFICANTLY less cable news over the last two years.

Doesn't surprise me one bit. Last year we had health-care reform (people can related to this), a somewhat new polarizing president, and Beck's 9-12 project taking up the airwaves and this year we have financial regulation reform (harldy anyone can relate to this).

I haven't watched any cable news during the 2nd quarter....well unless you include browsing CB.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. Maddow's numbers vary between 1/5 and 1/3 of O'Reilly's.

Hannity's producers are certainly keeping their eye on Maddow's numbers, though. For example, last Tuesday the ratings were:

          Hannity: 525
          Maddow: 303
          King: 164
          Behar: 156

On Tuesday, Maddow also had better numbers than Olbermann and Matthews. This year, she occasionally comes in ahead of Olbermann and regularly beats Matthews. This is quite an improvement over last year for her program.
