Seriously, dude... you can do better than that. No one in their right mind would think that 25% withheld is high.
I'm flipping this back and forth, but I can't figure out which way its supposed to come out.

Look need to look at it from the employer's perspective...

When you add it all up, it costs $74,000 to put $44,000 in Sally's pocket and to give her $12,000 in benefits. Bottom line: Governments impose a 33% surtax on Sally's job each year.
This is for an employee that is high school graduate with some specialized training.

Employees are pretty damn expensive and the government isn't making them any cheaper to hire with more taxes and mandates. So it may be more cost effective to just outsource as much as possible overseas or do more with the employees that they currently have. It doesn't seem like things are getting much better in the job market and the economic adviser rats are starting to jump off the USS Obama.

The good news is the unemployment outlook improves drastically after the fifth beer.

If you read the article, it's more like 40%, because the employer is paying a good portion of her taxes and benefits. Tack on sales tax and property tax, and you're pushing 50%. No one in their right mind would think 50% is low.

So, what percentage would someone in their right mind, such as yourself, think is too high?

And King Noah's subjects were bitching about being taxed at only 20%.

I would probably think it were too high if 50% were being withheld from my paycheck. It really would depend on what I got for that 50%, though. My family members in Europe pay about 50%, but with that comes full medical, retirement, and unemployment coverage, services like police, fire, garbage pickup, etc. Their higher education is paid for and they get unrivaled vacation and "family" time (one year paid leave for the mother when she has a baby, one month paid leave for the father). Their roads, bridges, and tunnels are clean and kept up to date, and they have subsidized rail and subway systems. What they take home is theirs to enjoy.

I guess then it becomes a financial matter of whether or not the company would rather have that much "overhead" to hire labor, or if they would prefer to set up shop elsewhere that doesn't have such onerous requirements.

Tim is noble - he's trying to educate us about how better our lives could be. He's fighting the good fight.

No need to be divisive. You're implying something that I never suggested. I actually live abroad right now and I'm looking forward to moving back to the US. I love my country and I miss the comforts of home.

When did I call America a craphole? Is it possible to love multiple countries? Did I even mention anything about my personal preference? I was stating fact about the types of services received in exchange for the taxes they pay, and I made no comment suggesting that I think America is bad. In fact, it was Ted Nugent that was complaining about the state of America. I was the one being optimistic, suggesting that taxes aren't that high in the US, and that they're higher elsewhere. I then pointed out that people in those countries generally receive more services in exchange for their taxes. Where did I state a preference?
