Despite all the evidence to the contrary, his family thought he was a genius. He even did his own "translation" of the Bible. It wasn't a real translation in that he just made it rhyme, but his wife and mom thought it was the greatest thing ever. The mom tried to sell his Bible and a book of poetry at church once. It was kind of funny to hear the sisters talk about what went down in Relief Society when she announced that they were for sale. I'll never forget that guy or his wife who gave me food poisoning.
Ugh. My aunt does seem to think he's kind of a genius. My uncle does have quite a head for arcane details and trivia and knows an absurd amount about Star Trek. So far, he hasn't used his excellent memory to get ahead in life.

I suppose I can't talk too much. I'm not collecting unemployment, but I'm an unemployed law school graduate.

In my profession, it's not always easy to find a great job situation in Utah. Some might argue I would have been better off to go elsewhere. However, we chose Utah. I found a job in my profession, however, I had a very difficult time finding a second job in my line of work for after hours, weekends, etc.

So, since we weren't making a great deal of money, I took odds and end jobs working manual labor and maintenance type jobs to earn money on the side and get ahead to get money for a down payment on a house. ( I won't even start on the housing issue and the sense of entitlement that so many people have for a 6500 SF house etc.)

So, here I was, a guy with a professional degree and an undergraduate degree doing what I could to get ahead. Was it beneath me? No.

I figured it was beneath me to do less.

That being said, things have now worked out great for us. We persevered and I found an opportunity in the area in which we wanted to live and work. I don't have to work side jobs. Life is pretty good.

I have a belief in the law of the harvest. You might have to work your ass off to get what you want, but if you are trying, things will break for you eventually. I think NOTHING is going to change if you are at home playing a fucking video game.

How does someone with a degree figure that collecting unemployment is "beneath" them but working in a job outside of their scope is??? DO NOT GET IT!

End of rant. The people talked about in this thread make me sick. The people in the article...the lazy uncle. Sickening.
Great post. I couldn't agree more.

When we were first married, Mpfunk worked temp jobs and odd jobs for us to get by. He had a J.D. It wasn't beneath him. He worked some really crappy jobs (including work for a completely unethical Halloween costume company).

When my dad was between years in medical school, he also worked temp jobs that ranged picking cherries to digging basements with a shovel.

Hard work is beneath no one.

Yeah, I know how that goes. It took me six months after graduation to find the part-time job I have now. Are you taking the bar here?
        Not that, sickos.

It's seeming that way, but I didn't sign up for the July bar relying on the part-time but decent-paying job doing non-legal work that laid my whole department off in March. By then, it was too late to apply for the Utah bar in July.

The job search hasn't been pretty so far. I'm considering taking a job waiting tables or signing up for a temp agency just to start producing some kind of personal cash flow. Fortunately for now we have Mpfunk's job, but I need to get doing something quick before those student loans come due.

Don't you have at least six months before your first payment? Job searching is awful. I sent a few hundred resumes out and wrung my network dry and still came up empty. I finally got the job I have now, and I was grateful to get it. They've actually sent me to court! (2-0 baby!) They've made it clear though that there isn't full-time potential for the foreseeable future. So I met with a recruiter to talk about the path to become a JAG officer in the Marine Corps today. We'll see how that goes.

Good luck to you, too. And congrats on getting to go to court! That's awesome. I'm sorry you don't have options for advancement in your current position.

I guess I still have five months of loan grace period, if the bell begins tolling as of the day of graduation. I found out today when grades came out that I am indeed an official graduate. It was the epitome of the anti-climax.

Yep. And as far as the job search goes, you'll find something eventually. What kind of law are you looking to practice?

At this point, any type of law that pays (except law of the ambulance-chasing variety). Or possibly non-law. My big law firm experience ended poorly.

You know, my friend told me the other day that the Salt Lake City Prosecutor's office was hiring. I don't know if the job has any experience requirements, but it could be worth looking into.
