  • Free Speech Stifled on South Park

    http://marquee.blogs.cnn.com/2010/04...entral/?hpt=T2

Ridiculous. I understand that there are economic issues involved, but it seems like cowering kowtowing to Muslims who 'hint' at violence over mocking their religion.

Looks like we have a blueprint for making sure the Mormon Musical does not portray the church in a negative way.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

The dumb thing in all this is that there is already an episode of South Park that runs all the time called "Super Best Friends" that features Jesus, Buddha, Vishnu, Joseph Smith, AND Muhammad all "fighting evil."

It's old though, probably pre-9/11, so no one thought it was a big deal to piss off Muslims (more than any other religious group) back then. Muslims now get to flex their political correctness muscle via subtle hints of violence (seriously, read the article), and we will kowtow.

Not good. Not good at all.

This is one of the consequences of our society succumbing to political correctness. I'd love to see the South Park guys turn up the heat rather than tone it down, but the wusses at Comedy Central won't allow it to happen.

Well, if Comedy Central is going to lose money, they would be wise NOT to show the episode. I think the larger issue is that because Comedy Central owns the broadcasting rights to their episodes, they don't really have a big enough channel by which they can disseminate their 'art.' But, they knew this when they signed the big money contract.

It's very complicated, but ultimately, I don't think that the economic impact on Comedy Central would be that great....if anything, South Park has kept that channel afloat.

I can understand Comedy Central not wanting to lose money, but I believe that free speech is more important than finances. Also, I believe that South Park could generate more revenue for Comedy Central if it pushed the issue, because more folks would want to see how far Parker and Stone will go, though that would depend on whether or not sponsors have any guts.

Well, I think the fear might be that pushing things might only be a short-term gain. I don't think that South Park is going to suddenly rise in popularity and maintain an increase in viewership over this issue.

Of course, Parker and Stone can always jump networks when their next contract runs out. Can you imagine South Park on HBO?

I don't think this about political correctness. South Park thrived on scoffing at political correctness. The show wouldn't exist if it adhered to it. A double standard is what we are seeing here. Political correctness would mean sensativity to mormons, blacks, asians, gays, christians, scientologiests, libe rals,conservatives,jews.canadians. let's be honest they have taken the hatchet to all those groups. This is fear of violence not about being PC.

I'm talking about Comedy Central being politically correct by not wanting to offend anyone.

Comedy Central may be one of the least politically correct corporations out there. They thrive on their lack of political correctness.

This is about the dumbest possible conclusion at which you could have arrived.

How so? Because you deem it dumb? If so, it doesn't impress me.
