Skipping General Conference

I'm skipping General Conference from now on. I don't need a new prophet and any new revelations... Joseph Smith said everything I would ever need to hear. I will base my life solely on his teachings. THAT'S CALLED ORIGINAL INTENT, BROTHERS!

And from now on I'm calling patriarchs "evangelists." There was no need for the church to change that. Joseph Smith wouldn't have wanted ANYONE to change that!

OK, I'm going to bed. My original intent tonight was to go to bed at midnight. Then I reinterpreted my wishes and decided to stay up later. It's now 1:30 AM and on one hand I'm glad to still be up, because it's the weekend and I didn't really have a reason to go to bed at midnight, it was just an arbitrary line I drew in the sand. On the other hand, though, if I had stuck with my original intent I'd have gotten 90 additional minutes of great sleep.

That seems silly. We like revelation. Situations change, and God tells us how to act in the meantime.

As such, I don't care if Joseph Smith said it, or even if President Monson said it. I'm going to do whatever I want to do when I want to do it, even if it contradicts the commandments. I'll do whatever I feel like doing. THAT'S CALLED LIVING SCRIPTURE, BROTHERS!

Don't give me this garbage about how changes to the instructions we have received should only come through authorized channels and procedure. If I have to wait for a prophet to speak up, we'll be waiting forever.

Yes, there is. It is a debate, by analogy, on original intent v. living document as applied to the constitution. Tim shows that overly adhering to the original intent of lawmakers results in desuetude; I point out that abandoning the authorized means of amending law results in disorder.

Would that there were some happy medium betwixt the two!
