The official President (Palin, Huckabee, or Jindal) thread
Could there have been a worse question to ask Palin than "What newspapers and magazines do you read?" That Katie got rewarded for being a hard hitting journalist after that is sad. I imagine the follow up questions that were edited out were "What cable or satellite package do you have?" "Have you ever eaten cheese made in a different country?"

I think that it is a totally legitimate question. People want to elect a well informed person to be the president. The newspapers and magazines question speaks directly to this issue. It certainly wasn't a bad question. Palin just decided to characterize it that way, because she flubbed it up so bad.

I can't seem to find or remember another candidate from either party ever being asked what newspaper they read. A great answer would have been "None, it is a dying medium."
You will not find me defending Palin on any other issue, but this was a pathetic attempt at hard hitting journalism by Couric.

I don't think it was intended to be 'hard hitting journalism.' That is how Palin characterized it, not Couric. And are you seriously suggesting that candidates should only be asked questions from an official pool that has been asked of other candidates in other races? The newspapers and magazines question was a softball.

It wasn't a softball, it was equilvalent to an intentional walk and Palin decided to swing at pitches that were way out of the batters box. She could have answered it in a way to not only make her seem informed, but also sensitive to liberal issues as well. What if she answered that she not only reads the WSJ and watches Fox News, but she also watches MSNBC and reads the NY Times so she can look at issues from all different angles.
She blew that question so bad that nothing else in that interview even mattered.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
