            It's a Southern thing. I always say "Northern" not "Yankee" Aggression.

                            I was going to ask the same question. In fairness, however (and I say this as a descendant of Yankee soldiers and sailors and a Northern sympathizer), in that era there was still a debate going on about what it meant to be a sovereign state. The Civil War settled that question, at least as far as the meaning of "Union" goes.
