All the fancy new medical equipment costs a fortune. I know because I work for a company that makes a lot of it. The giant vacuum tubes used for radiology cost anywhere from $20-200k. The 45x36cm flat panel detector (for x-rays, they take the place of the film cassette) that I'm directly involved with cost around $45k. These items have a limited lifespan and then must be replaced. We aren't ripping off our customers as these things cost a mint to manufacture.

These costs have to be made back by the procedure.
