There are paid headhunters that come to hospitals and larger clinics that perform RAK audits. They audit the charts and if the documentation does not match the billing level, then the clinic is assessed a negative billing and it is withheld from future payment.

The labor and cost of the appeals process will directly influence whether hospitals will want to dispute a finding for each claim."

How much do YOU think it will cost to appeal a RAC violation? If it becomes too expensive (because you are on the defensive), they will cease doing those marginally extra procedures because they may not get paid. You see, defensive medicine is practiced because of malpractice. Are you starting to see? Ugh.
